I have a Yamaha RX-A3010 hooked to a 5.1 speaker system. TV is connected to the receiver via HDMI. My HTPC (JRiver on Windows 7) is connected to the receiver via HDMI. If I play an audio file on the HTPC, I have to have the TV on for sound to come of the speakers. You guys have an idea how I can play audio file without the TV on.

Try placing an HDMI switch or splitter between the AVR and the TV so the AVR reads the EDID off the switch/splitter to complete the chain.
