I currently have a Marantz AV8801 pre pro with an emotiva xpa5 using audioquest diamondback xlr cables with Martin Logan Spire towers, Martin Logan Stage center, Martin Logan Depth i sub and Polk fxi5 surrounds. I'm considering going with a Rotel rmb-1095 and sell the xpa5. Is it a worthy change or stay with what I have?
No, absolutely not, there will be no difference. Most people on this forum think that all amps sound the same. I am not necessarily of this belief, as I believe some of the über high end amps such as McIntosh or Mark Levensin, but most of the more affordable amps, ie Rotel, Emotiva, ect..., are all pretty much the same. Moving from the Emotiva XPA-5 to the Rotel 1095 would be a totally lateral move. Pointless, assuming the current and wattages are the same or relatively similar.
Martycool's comments about it being a lateral move are spot on. If your Emotiva can cleanly drive your ML's to your desired maximum SPL's, there will be zero discernible difference with a Rotel or similar amp. Stay with what you have.
If you have the upgrade bug, look at spending where tangible improvements to sound can be made: speakers and subs. For example, consider a second identical sub and/or timbre matched surrounds from the same ML line as your front stage. Can your room accommodate a pair of rear speakers? There's an increasing amount of native 7.1 channel content out there now to take advantage of.
