I am playing a DTS-HD on my ps3, with it set on bitstream, and the listening modes set on direct, but it keeps converting from 5.1 to 7.1 How do I make it play the direct 5.1 video without converting to 7.1?

Thanks

Well, you didn't mention what receiver you have so that would help.

If you turn off the surround back speakers on your receiver then it can only play 5.1.

Sorry, it is a TX-NR809. When I hit display on the receiver, it says the input is 5.1-DTS-HD, and the output is 7.1. I don't want to have to turn off the back speakers, I just want to get the hd sound as it was recorded on the blu ray.

Thanks

If you have a 7.1 setup and the source is 5.1 your receiver is either going to give you TrueHD + PLIIx or DTS-HD + Neo:6.

It has to do something to get audio to the surround back channels if they are enabled.

DTS wants the output of its decoder to match the playback configuration. That's why DTS Essential decoders on many players expand 5.1 to 7.1. Some Onkyo receivers do that now, too. It looks like yours is one of them. If that's the case, disabling the rears is likely the only solution. Or, set the PS3 to PCM as it does not do DTS channel expansion.

If I set the ps3 to PCM, wouldn't that degrade the sound quality?

No.

DTS-HD MA starts off as PCM...

Nope. PCM is the actual format of movie soundtracks. Dts-MA and TrueHD are just zipped up versions used to save space on the disc. Decoding turns them back into PCM and it doesn't matter whether you decode in the player or receiver. You get the same PCM either way.
