Hi there,

Ik own a Marantz NR160.
When I run Audyssey it keeps telling me it has set the subwoofer level to -12.0 - EVEN with the volume knob on my subwoofer turned all the way down.
My sub is a Boston Acoustics ASW250. I run it on the subwoofer output on my Marantz.

Any suggestion on what to do?
The bass IS quite boomy right now...

Thanks in advance for your reply!

Yes. Review the Audyssey 101/FAQ Guide linked in my sig. You may have to turn the sub down to as low as 1 out of 10 to get the volume closer to 0db than to -12db.

That subwoofer has line level and LFE inputs, which one are you using?

The bass IS quite boomy right now...

Most of the subwoofers I've worked with go stone dead with the volume turned down all the way.

Perhaps an in-line RCA-> RCA attenuator will help.

I already turned it (volume) down completely... (had it at 5 or 12 'o' clock and ran Audyssey, then at 4, 3, 2, 1) - I have read the Audyssey how to...
I am using the LFE input on the subwoofer.

Where is the sub placed? If near a wall (or worse yet a corner), move it away from the wall/corner.

I am using the LFE input on the subwoofer.

Try using the line input instead. turn the crossover all the way to the right and start with the volume in the 9:00 or 10:00 position. Doesn't matter if you use left or right input.

Thanks so far all of you!

I am going to run Audyssey again in half an hour, while using the line input - sounds logical to me this could work. Right now my wife is watching television so I have no choice but to wait...wink.gif

Does any of you have a clue what might be causing the sub to keep performing too loud when using the LFE-input? Can placement be a cause? I moved the sub 10 cm from the wall (don't know in inches, I think 4?).

Will post the outcome later today, maybe tomorrow!

Why don't you just use Audyssey again, and then MANUALLY set the sub volume with an SPL meter from your seating position???

Thanks for your reply.

Here's my answer:
Because I do not own an SPL meter, for instance. Furthermore: there is nothing more to set manually -> my receiver is at it's max (-12.0 DB) and the volume on the woofer itself has been turned down completely! Wat else could I set manually?

Hi Afrogt,

I have done as you have told me: I connected via the line input but still Channel Level reports to have set the subwoofer at -12.0 DB -> tried to set volume at 10.00, then 09.00. then minimum....

Here's another idea for some troubleshooting. The potentiometer behind the gain knob on your sub may be kaput. Try to apply some contact spray (WD 40 or something), make a couple of quick rotations on the knob afterward. Then try to listen to some bass heavy material and see whether rotating the gain knob changes the bass volume you are hearing. If no change call for service. Report back please. smile.gif

The gain knob = volume knob?
I have 2 knobs: volume and crossover, furthermore I hava a phase switch and off/on/auto switch.

Note: I think SOMETHING is kaput for when playing the reference disk, acquired from this forum, turning the volume knob had NO effect. Cable is in line input on SW and in Pre-Out on NR1601 receiver
As stated before, my sub is Boston Acoustics ASW250

Yeah, it should be the gain knob, also known as volume knob. Leave the others (crossover knob and phase switch) untouched. Please try my idea so that you can confirm it or rule it out. smile.gif

I applied some WD40 to the metal area between the volme knob and the housing of the sub, turned the knob several times and played some content from the reference BD I mentioned.

When I turn the volume knob during playback nothing happens / changes. Just the same amount of lows which is plenty.

Knob kaput? Needs fixing?
(Need I mention the sub was 9 months of age when I acquired it?)

It's turning REALLY easy, more so than the crossover knob - could be the WD40 lol

When I wiggle the knob I can hear it, it crackles the woofer somewhat so yes, it's definately broken...

Should you not be a technically savvy guy, like knowing how to use a soldering iron, I'd recommend to take it to a pro or let him come to your house. Hope this helps. smile.gif

That avr or sub is not functioning properly. A 250 watt, 10 in sub should be easier to integrate into a system. Something needs fixing or replacing.

Watched a load of stuff from the Reference BD from this forum and it sounded good! smile.gif

You shouldn't need the use the volume knob anymore now that your system is set.

Did you end up using the line input or LFE input?

Kinda off-topic: I replaced the wire from my Mordaunt Short center speaker. I went from quite an older wire to a new and shorter Monster cable. I think it produces less volume right now. Is this possible?
