For subwoofer not just any rca cable will do. Use the 75 ohm cable (yellow video) like this.
http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=102&cp_id=10236&cs_id=1023603&p_id=6305&seq=1&format=2&utm_expid=58369800-11.R-enhtUGRrSdHz5vzpVS2g.0&utm_referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.monoprice.com%2FCategory%3Fc_id%3D102%26cp_id%3D10236

For speaker wire thicker (smaller #) is better. I use this low priced 12 gauge. No need to bi-wire.

Gauge chart. 12 = 2.053 mm. 16=1.29mm.

I have purchased an RX-A830, but haven't opened it yet. I have one thing giving me pause which is that it looks like I can't disable the volume indicator overlay on video output. Is that correct or does anyone have some trick to do that? Through the web interface perhaps? Can someone confirm where the volume indicate shows up on the picture (center or bottom?) and how long it stays up after you are done changing the volume? Are there any other overlays that appear without user request?

Another question I have is whether "7ch Stereo" is the mode that will cause "plain old" stereo signals (like from MP3s or and iPod playing through AirPlay) to be output to all channels? If so, does that include the subwoofer?

Lastly, if I enter "Party" mode, then I can output digital audio sources to Zone 2, right? Can I then just turn down/mute the main zone volume, effectively allowing me to have digital (mixed down to stereo is fine) sources go to Zone 2?

Thanks,
JV

You can disable the volume overlay (set "Short Message" to Off in the Function Menu).

7ch stereo works with any input (stereo or otherwise) and gives you sound from all channels. But you have other options like Pro Logic IIx as well. The subwoofer will be used (as long as you set the main speakers to small, which is recommended anyway).

Yes, Party Mode allows any source to go to zone 2, including digital sources like HDMI, and the zones have independent volume control.

I've had an RX-A730 since Super Bowl Sunday.  I use this receiver for Cable box, BluRay, AppleTV, AirPlay, and streaming from an Olive 4HD music server.  I have to say I'm extremely pleased with it.  It replaced a Marantz SR-7005.  The Yamaha is better than the Marantz in so many ways, particularly the sound - but that's a topic for a separate thread.  The larger and more expensive Marantz is has more power, and a few issues I have with the display of music library from my Olive 4HD music server, but otherwise the Yamaha is the better receiver.

Using the Yamaha's "Server" input, it automatically discovers, or finds, the Olive4HD as a DLNA/UPnP compliant device.  It's able to communicate with the server, and decode FLAC files from my music library up to 24bit/96KHz.  This part is great.  I only have problems with the interface for selecting music.

When I browse Artists or Albums, the listings are not alphabetized correctly.  It appears like there are alphabetized sections interspersed with entries that are out of order.  Sections of the Artists list are alphabetized, then 1 or more artists appear out of order, then another group of alphabetized artists, etc.  There's no Search function to deal with it either, and I don't believe that Search is part of the DLNA/UPnP specification anyway.

I used to get sorted listings with my Marantz, so I don't think it's the Olive 4HD's fault.  The Marantz sorts the listings correctly.  Not sure if the spec requires sorted listings from the server interface or not.  Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else is using the Server input, and if so, whether you experience the same thong, or have found a solution.  My firmware is up to date.

I'm seriously considering upgrading to an 830 or possibly a 1030 if the price is right.
My question is, has anyone purchased off eBay, there is an 830 selling for around 650$ new.
Is there anything I should be worried about?

I was just helping a guy who bought the 673 for $420 from ebay after the $430 773 deal sold out. He had good luck. Not sure which vendor it was. I would consider this 7065 instead of the 830. Exact same thing as the 820 minus 2 hdmi inputs for $500.

Thanks, that makes me feel better about buying from eBay, I'm sure I'm fine being that it's new. My current yamaha (htr 6090) is still going strong after 8 years, it's just way outdated.
Now I just have to decide between the rxa830 and 1030
I want to stay in the Aventage line, I hear that fifth foot is quite a leap in technology!

Not all that much really. I also have an A1000. The first year they made the Aventage line. It probably sounds better. How much? Not sure. The 1030 does move up to a bigger power supply (490 watts vs 400) and more connections. Otherwise they are very close. The 2030 jumps up to a true subwoofer manual eq and more preout channels. The main channels do have manual eq down to 31.3hz with q factor on all models though.

I would be interested in folks opinions on this as well. I just replaced an Anthem MRX300 with the Pioneer SC-71 because I needed more inputs and grew tired of the difficulty in automation (secondary remote control) of the Anthem. However, I do think the MRX300 with ARC sounds better than the SC-71 with single point MCACC. Considering moving to the RX-A830 to get multi-point YPAO, but it would cost more money since I was able to ge the SC-71 on open box from BB for $594. Any thoughts or comparisons from folks who have been in both camps before?

i ended up grabbing the marantz 6008 yesterday, and am very pleased so far.
easy setup, much richer tonal quality than my pioneer sc 25, and my Martin Logans never sounded better!

I would like to go with the 830 but I'm worried about the drop in power from the 6090, do you think I'll notice any difference?

I watch mostly movies and some tv at moderate volume.

My speakers are:
Polk Rtia3 fronts and surrounds
Polk Csia6 center
Polk psw505 sub

Any input on this would be appreciated.

I have a 2012 model 773 that is the exact same power as the 830. I tested the power output. When I ran 5 beefy center (basically 4 ohm mini towers) speakers all set to large with no subwoofer the receiver didn't have enough power. When I switched to 5.1 all speakers set to small it played super loud no problem. You should be fine even with the mains set to large. The 1030 clearly does have more power (about 25%) though.

And that 25% extra power will let you play 1dB louder, so it's not a big deal. As you said it's much more important to set speakers to small and have a good powered sub.

Well the 830 seems like the way to go, I. Can put the money I save towards the svs pb2000 I've been drooling over!
Another question, can you run zone 2 audio and presence speakers (obviously not at the same time) and will the 830 switch between the two when one is not in use?
I hope I'm making sense. I just want to use the presence speakers when zone 2 isn't being used. Without switching wires

I am interested in the Energy Take Classic 5.1 for my first set of speakers, lots of them on CL in my area. Would the Energy Take's be compatible with either a 730 or 830 AVR? If so, would it be optimal or acceptable? Thank you!

Yup. If purchased from an unauthorized dealer (which most on ebay are not authorized), then Yamaha will not honor the 3 year warranty so you would also need to purchase an extended warranty from a 3rd party to ensure it's covered as replacing a defective HDMI board can cost upwards of $400 to replace outside of warranty. Better just to "call" an authorized dealer and compare pricing. wink.gif

These are easy to drive lower level speakers for smaller rooms and would work just fine if your budget does not allow for better quality speakers.

As noted from the back panel image of the 830 below, the FH Presence and Zone 2 speakers use the same speaker posts so with the 830, you must choose one or the other. To use both, you would need to connect the Zone 2 pre-outs to a dedicated 2CH amp in order to power the Zone 2 speakers or upgrade to the 2030 which has separate speaker posts for both.

Do have any suggestion for a budget set of speakers that pair nicely with either a 730 or 830? Obviously that are a little higher end than the energy takes.

You need to have a max budget in mind first and whether you are willing to start with a 3.1 setup to get better speakers now and save up for the surrounds or if you want a 5.1 setup now.

Anyone know what class of amp these AVRs use? Also, where can I look to find out an AVRs amp class?

Thanks!

Most receivers still use class a/b amps, including these. Most companies don't publish that info though. Pioneer is using class d in the upper models.
I would like to see a class h receiver. So far, I haven't heard of one.

I contacted two ebay sellers that listed RX-A730's at rock-bottom prices, claiming they were new and covered by warranty. Only one replied, and they said the unit was completely new & unopened, but that the warranty was through the seller. So, you'd need to decide how you feel about the seller honoring any warranty claims, unless you buy a warranty from a 3rd party.

Hi guys,

I have a A730 and I have been owning it for a week now and there seem to be some issues that i need to work around, any help with these?

- The video quality seems to be a little weird when compared to what I saw with the RX-V575. I am not sure what settings i need to follow. I have Dish Network, and the video is coming in at 1080i.

Is there a video setting that I can follow?

- There is a lag when it comes to airplay? Has anyone gotten around this?

I want to get the best out of this receiver! Also, does switching to Eco mode make sense? What does it actually do?

Thanks in advance!

Hi.
I just recently upgraded my rx-v663 with a rx-a830 (power is not a concern as I have external amps).
However I do have one strange issue. The "short message" volume display doesn't work on hdmi1, but seems to be functional on other inputs. Has anyone else seen this problem?

Hello All!  Yes, I've had my 730 for a week now (along w/a pair of Polk Audio speakers).  I love it but am still trying to figure a few things out. The parametric EQ and how to send audio out via an optical cable in AV4.  Also, just got a SanDisk Cruzer Fit CZ33 64GB USB Flash Drive that nestles in there real nice!  Sadly, it doesn't seem to be compatible.  I'm going to dump some FLAC files on another thumb drive and try that just to be sure.

It's nice to have a forum for other owners of this unit. There seems to be a lot to it. I probably won't be able to answer any questions (for a while anyway), but hopefully I can glean enough info from everyone else to get the most out of it.
