after months of saving, i can finally purchase the avr of my dreams, the denon avr 5803, which has everything i need:

- ac-3 rf input for laserdiscs
- phono kack for lp's
- thx sound modes
- extra surround option (not height, wide or back surrounds)
- plenty of power

this is the one for me, but my mean mother won't let me take a risk and buy it!
any commments?

Is she a large woman?

I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather, except not while driving a school bus.

Nah, just bossy and over protective.
i had to purchase my Pioneer CLD-D704 laserdisc player behind her back.
she is the woman of the house, and newer denon avr's are not as good.

any advice?

This receiver is 10 years old, how long has it been your dream receiver?

Your Mom is right. You would be much better served purchasing a newer model with Audyssey MultEQ for the same amount or even less.

i don't like the newer models, and all the new features can go.
really don't need or want Audyssey MultEQ, Audyssey DSX, those hd enhancements (dolby true hd, dts ma)
besides, i'd save money on the extra surround speakers and built in ac-3 demodulator for the laserdisc.

also due to the fact that older avr's generally are better.

Sorry, although the 5803 was a flagship model in it's day ... current lower level models that include Audyssey will have better audio fidelity. If just having a beefier AVR is your choice ... get your Mom's permission and go for it. smile.gif

I had a Denon 5803 back in the day and held onto it until 2008 when I upgraded to the Denon 5308ci. I'd only touch this if you have absolutely NO interest in lossless audio, HDMI, 1080p, or room correction. A better choice would be a Denon AVR-3808ci as it has most of the modern features along with legacy inputs. The amp section is weaker than the 5803 but nothing an external amp can't fix.

HD-DVD = 94
Blu-Ray = 120 ( 24 Warner red2blu )

room correction---pass.
lossless audio--can live without, analog and old school is my bag!\
new features--get lost (don't need no dolby truehd or hdmi)

it saves me the trouble of not having to purchase an ac-3 demodulator (that would mean 2 power outlets) or phono jack for my turntable.
besides, i've seen the back of the new models, not impressed.

Sounds to me like you've already made up your mind to buy the 5803. You should go ahead and purchase it.

I owned an AVR-5803A for 8 years. It was a workhorse and I sold it on eBay over a year ago. Excellent receiver for its time. If you find one, make sure it has the Denon Link 3 upgrade (that indicates it is the A model).

I have an AVR-5308A (with latest 3D plus other upgrades) now. Wouldn't trade the 5308A for the 5803A because of the Audyssey sound processing. It cleared up so much in the room. And, when I'm listening to music, I don't have to be at reference level to hear the same tonal quality. Makes a big difference with peace in the household.

However, if you are set on the 5803A, you'll gain the LD AC3 input (if you can keep a LD going). A few more analog inputs as well.

About 9 years ago, my dream receiver was a AVR-5805 (the Dreadnaught!). When it was finally time to upgrade the 5803A, I went back and looked at a refurbed 5805A and just couldn't justify it. Time had passed it by for the price.

However, if you can get a 5803A with the upgrade and at a decent price (check eBay for sold items), then you'll be happy with the receiver as long as you don't need HDMI (which I used a separate matrix switcher to handle). Also make sure you have a Radio Shack sound meter for balancing the 7.1-channel audio. I still use that even with Audyssey to confirm the readings (they are sometimes up to 2dB off).

"Carla, if you prevent me from buying what I WANT, i will hate you 'til the day i die, i won't forgive you, no more bringing your laptop" mad.gif (my emoticon would be pissed as hell)

my pioneer d704 laserdisc player is working perfectly, ready for ac-3 and dts playback (once i get the 5803, and 2 dts movies)

can anyone tell me how the variable crossover filter works in the 5803--is it per speaker, what?

also, the 5805 is too heavy for me, that would break my back...and my shelf!

Here's the owner's manual:
http://usa.denon.com/DocumentMaster/US/AVR5803_ownersmanual.pdf

Page 22 discusses crossover frequency. My memory is that the crossover frequency is a single parameter set for all small speakers. The owners manual seems to support my memory.

I never tried a DTS LD with the 5803A since my Pioneer didn't support DTS LD. Obviously DTS-CD and DTS for DVDs are supported but I don't know if the RF input for LD supports DTS. You might want to verify that before purchase.

Also many of the old LCD remotes that came with the 5803A have issues after 10 years. You should verify that the remote works correctly before purchase. That remote has a lot of functions, so if you use a universal remote instead, make sure it has the ability to download or learn all of the remote functions.

Also remember there are threads for the AVR-5803A in this forum:

I think that you will find that Andy is correct. DTS doesn't use the same "encoding" as DD on a LD disc and hence you only need either optical out or coax for dts and no demod is needed (basically the "digital stream" is the same as pcm audio which is replaced on DTS LDs).... at least I think that is how my setup is (thru a mod pioneer player).... I haven't played a dts disc in a bit so I would have to verify that. I think you can find a cheaper solution in an outboard demod box (that is what I use with my denon 4308).

i was referring to test movies-- i know goldeneye shines on ac-3, so does casper and apollo 13 on dts.

average ac-3 rf demod is 250 bucks, inconvenience towards extra cable and power outlet.

OK... but that's just "today", there have been other units forsale on ebay at lower cost. Further, what is your "momma" letting use today to watch your "beloved" LD's? There are likely a few other ways to "skin the cat.... ummmm... momma"... :-)

As Andy and I indicated, DTS LD do not use rf encoding, they are put in the digital tracks and thus do not need a demod for those... of course, there aren't that many to begin with... but just in case your "momma" knows that... :-)

Assuming the question isn't rhetorical, there are a few reasons for LD over DVD, but the only technical one would be that it is an analog technology. The picture is nowhere near as sharp on LD (less lines on a LD), the colors are based on old fashioned NTSC (Never The Same Color) and quite a few other things. But, there are also no digital artifacts. However, for most of the population, the DVD picture would look better than LD. Audio-wise, most people would rate them equal if the LD had a digital audio track (early LDs only had analog tracks). Of course the LD is a 4:3 medium, so if you are matching to a 4:3 TV, that might be an advantage.

Where the LDs really shine are that some of the titles on LD are not available on DVD or Blu-Ray. Check the Beatles catalog for movies where the LD version is still perferred over the DVD or Blu-Ray release. There are other movies that for contractual reasons only appear on LD.

That's about it. Everything else goes to DVD and Blu-Ray as an advantage. Well, except that with LD, you get to see a tray that can handle an LP record-sized disc and has to play both sides of the disc. Where else could you see that?

humor..good.

i know dts works on the digital tracks, it's the ac-3 that is tricky.
me and my mom have led tv's, but some differences

ME:

40" led tv, brand: toshiba
upconverting dvd player--philips dvp 3680, not sure about dts/dolby out, setting is 1080p.
vcr/dvd combo, no hdmi, but dts out.
laserdisc player--pioneer cld d704, ready for ac-3 and dts.
digital cable box (only the outdated rca yellow-white-red cables)

CARLA (my mom):

42" led tv, brand: lg
old fashioned dvd player--panasonic, has dts/sacd playback, she's using component at 480p. (i keep telling her to UPGRADE)
does not use laserdiscs
digital cable box (new hd/1080 model)

i can upload a few screen captures of my current setup, since we both have 16:9 tv's.

did you know...there was a time when my mom didn't purchase widescreen dvd's? i persuaded her to get widescreen dvd's, and dts dvd's too.
