Hello everyone. I'm currently looking to upgrade my Onkyo HT-R590 (which came with the HT-S5400 HTIB) to either the Onkyo tx-nr616 or the Denon avr-e400.
I have done a lot of research on both and I am really leaning towards the Denon unit, but the current pricing on the Onkyo, it's becoming frustrating making a choice. I currently have Audyssey 2eq on my Onkyo now and have not really been impressed and have been looking at stepping up to a receiver with Multi EQ for a better room/sound setup. The system's main priority will be movies/TV with a little music and since I already have a upgraded 7.1 speaker set up I'm looking to get the best sound for home theater use.
Could any owners of said receivers chime in to help me ease into a choice? Thanks in advance.

The 616 is on clearance as it is last year's 2012 model which only features Audyssey 2EQ while its successor the 626 features the Audyssey MultEQ you want just as does the E400. Both the E400 and 626 would be fairly comparable in features with both offering a 2 year warranty. The question is whether the new 2013 Onkyo line have been able to resolve the HDMI board failure issues from previous year's models.

JDSmoothie, from what I can gather from multiple forums online is that a lot of the issues with the HDMI as well as others have pretty much been resolved with Onkyo's firmware updates. I have no complaints when it comes to my Onkyo HT-R590 as it has never given me any issues at all and great sound, but I'd love to step up into a higher realm of prossesing and higher quality sound.

From what I can gather, Denon owners swear by better sound and reliability. I know that a lot of the SQ comes more from speaker selection and placement and I think that I've got that part down. Just wondering if the Denon AVR-E400 is worth the extra $100 vs. the Onkyo TX-NR626 as far as SQ goes?

Again, thanks for all the help!

The 626 and E400 have the same MSRP so I'm guessing you mean the 616 vs. the E400?

Yes, but right now on Amazon, the 626 is $499 and the E-400 is $599.

Does the Denon warrant that extra $100?

Is there somewhere else that is offering the Denon at the same $?

Hi Spriggan, Fry's has the E400 on sale for $317. If no Fry's is near, order by calling 877-688-7678, free shipping online.

I see the E400 @ Fry's for $599. I've never checked out the Fry's website before, but I see that ad for "major name brand" 7.1 receiver. How can you tell which model it is?

Hey Spriggan, did you decide on the Receiver? If so, which one?

I am curious because I have a similar setup (Onkyo HT-s3400 with the HT-r390 receiver). I've upgraded my center channel to the Definitive Tech Procenter 1000 and Promonitor 800's for Left & Right. However, not being able to upgrade the Passive Subwoofer AND that my rt-390 barely accomodates 14 gauge wire got me thinking about a receiver upgrade.

Like you, I've begun looking at the Denon AVR-e400 and the Onkyo 626. Hmmm...
