I was just wondering...
Is it closer to the X4000 than the 4520?

The 4308 was replaced by the 4810 which was replaced by the 4520. The X4000 is the successor to the 2808.

I don't think either is comparable. The newer models offer a lot more than the older models and either would be a big upgrade. The 4520 is probably closer power wise.

I don't care about things like 3D, network capabilities and so on, only about HD movie sound

That would come with an upgrade to the more advanced version of Audyssey MultEQ XT32, Both the X4000 and 4520CI feature this more advanced version over the MultEQ XT on the 4308CI.
