I have a Denon 3808 now and am redoing the entire AV environment (adding space to the home, an AV closet, etc.).

Location/zone 1 will be for music and a new 70" flat screen; I'll be using a 5.1 NHT Absolute wall speaker system.

Location/zone 2 will be for music and a smaller flat screen; don't know what speaker system yet.

Location/zone 3 will be for only music; I have an older 5.1 setup (BIC).

Location 4 is in the distant future (and may never materialize).

My sources are:

Cable TV boxes
xbox
Wii
Sonos
Roku
DVD

I tend to use HMDI from sources to AVR, and intend to use an HDMI<->Cat6 extended from AVR to TV.

Everything will be on a Slim5-29 in a dedicated closet (being built as I type this). 4 Cat6 and 2 RG6QS being run everywhere.

I'd sure appreciate any advice on other sources or components I might need.

Even more so, will the Denon handle different sources to different outputs simultaneously? Or do I need another receiver or an additional device?

Thanks very much!

If you want to pass the same video source to every zone you could simply use an HDMI splitter with the 3808CI, otherwise if you want more flexibility, consider upgrading to either the current replacement for the 3808CI, the 4520CI, or the current replacement for the 2808CI, the X4000 both of which use the more advanced version of Audyssey MultEQ XT32. Both would allow you to pass a second HDMI source to another Zone as well as both having a second main Zone output for the same source. You could then use the 3808CI to power the Zone 2 setup.

The X4000 sounds like exactly what I need.

As you can tell, I'm not well versed in AV.

Do I understand correctly that if I have 5 HDMI sources (A through E) and 3 zones (1 through 3), the X4000 will allow me to make any combination of source and zone?

Not sure what role the 3808CI plays -- I don't know what "power the Zone 2 setup" means? Does it mean that zone 2 is outputted from the X4000 at something like line-level, i.e., requiring amplification?

Thanks very much

No, not exactly .. .... There are (2) independent HDMI outputs so you could output 1 video source to the main zone, a second independent HDMI source (video and audio) using the Zone 2 HDMI output, and a 3rd independent "audio" only source. As far as the role of the 3808CI goes ... with a 5.1 setup in the main zone, the X4000 (being a 7.2 AVR) only has 2 more channels left so can power another set of speakers to either Zone 2 or Zone 3 (but not both). To power both Zones 2 and 3 speakers, you would need to add another AVR or 2CH external amp. Also you would need another AVR to power another full 5.1 setup which you discuss as your Zone 3.
