I tested B&W 685s and a Boston ASW250 with an Onkyo 515 and Denon 1713.

I thought the Onkyo sounded noticeably crisper, especially in the higher sounds like a swords slashing through the air in the GI Joe sequel and Fantine in Les Miz. I also thought the Onkyo had a more substantial sound, where the Denon seemed flat.

Does this match people's experience? Any advice on which to get?

Also, the salesman told me he brought out an Onkyo 525, but it was really a 515, which he claimed sounds the same. If I pick the Onkyo, should I stick to the 515 which has better reviews?

Considering none of the units likely had Audyssey enabled (which would tilt the scales), the 515 only uses the lowest version of Audyssey 2EQ which cannot EQ a subwoofer, while the 525 uses the next higher version, Audyssey MultEQ which can EQ the sub and has 2x the number of speaker EQ control points, and finally the 1713 has the next higher version, Audyssey MultEQ XT which has the same number of sub EQ control points as does MultEQ but has 8x more speaker EQ control points. So the nod for best audio fidelity would likely go to the 1713 with Audyssey enabled on all models.

That's probably right. Is there any way to audition an amp with Audyssey enabled?

Anyone tested a comparable Denon and Onkyo after Audyssey?

I'd like to avoid buying a Denon only to find out that even after Audyssey, I prefer the so-called signature Onkyo sound.

Here's the rub ... what you prefer isn't necessarily what someone else might prefer .. as your hearing is different, your speakers are different, and your listening environment is different. Only you can decide what you prefer, although usually difficult unless you can demo both models in your home, returning the one you don't want. The closest you might get is if someone responds that has either model and uses your speakers .. time will tell.

I can recommend you two excellent blogs from Audyssey CTO Chris Kyriakakis to read thoroughly:

Reference vs. Preference

Small vs. Large

As you will see there is no mentioning of either Onkyo or Denon. Both are licencees of Audyssey's room correction system and in this regard in a blind test after setting up Audyssey it would be really hard to pick out which is which. The next consideration you need to take care of should be the version of Audyssey which may be a case of personal budget. Anyhow, just stay away from 2EQ due to reasons jdsmoothie mentioned above.

The 626 has MultiEQ but the 616 does not.

If you get one of last year's models you need to go to the 818 to avoid getting Audyssey 2EQ.

A big price jump that makes it not worth going Onkyo in this context?

Any pros on the Onkyo?

Personally I think the overall quality of Denon and Onkyo is fairly comparable.

The one thing I do like about Onkyo is that the GUI and manual are a little more intuitive in my opinion.

Forgot to mention that if you are an iTunes user then AirPlay is a big check in the pro column for Denon.

Onkyo doesn't offer MultEQ XT on any of their 2012 or 2013 models.

Thanks all... none of this occurred to me. Denon got the awards over Onkyo for these lower end current model 2013 amps right?

But you do get MultEQ XT32 in the 818 and 929.
