HDMI supports DD+. The S/PDIF protocol used with optical and ARC does not.

That used to be the case, but isn't true anymore. Roku 4 can output DD+ over optical and at least newer Denons support it Sample post in Roku 4 Thread

I am not sure if any TVs support DD+over ARC.

Sorry, but I do not believe that the poster is correct. It's a limitation of S/PDIF and I have never seen anything to indicate there have been any changes in that protocol. I've spent some time looking for such information. Dolby's own DD+ Technical paper says the codec requires HDMI.

Apparently IEC 61937-3 defined transmission of DD+ over S/PDIF around the time of HD-DVD.

I don't have the Roku 4, but have seen issues about this pop up in a few threads. If you look at specs of Roku 4 it says it passes through dd+ over HDMI and optical. link

And thread about it on Roku forum

Thanks. I will check out that S/PDIF definition when I can. From time to time people post that they are getting Plus over optical. But such posts are quite rare. Assuming S/PDIF support, it would still require transmitting and receiving equipment with that capability. In the case of the poster linked above with a Denon 3312ci, the troubleshooting section of the Denon manual says to make an HDMI connection to get sound with dts-MA, TrueHD, and Dolby Digital Plus.

HDMI supports DD+ ARC (not the same as HDMI audio) does not. Audio stream FROM the TV is ARC.

S/PDIF does not support DD+ or any advanced codec.

Not sure why Roku and others cant seem to make this happen. Its part of the standard

http://www.dolby.com/us/en/technolog...data-sheet.pdf

Dolby Digital Plus ensures
compatibility with the millions
of Dolby Digital equipped receivers
and home theater systems currently
in use, with even better audio
performance than standarddefinition
DVD. Dolby Digital Plus
soundtracks are easily converted
to a 640 kbps Dolby Digital signal
without decoding and reencoding,
for output via S/PDIF. The 640 kbps
bit rate, higher than the 448 kbps
used on DVDs, is fully compatible
with all existing Dolby Digital
decoding products such as A/V
receivers and can provide higherthan-DVD
quality from Dolby Digital
Plus soundtracks

Looked (briefly) at the link. I'm not convinced either. DD+ over optical is not part of the Dolby spec. Roku may be doing some sort of trick, or just confusion as there seems to be more people on that thread complaining than anything else. The correct way is to convert DD+ to DD over optical or ARC.

I'm thinking that this should properly handle DD+ or anything contained in the audio stream, but wouldn't mind verification, since these things don't often work the way one would expect.

Thanks.
Perhaps too basic a question, but I'm still interested in getting a definitive answer here.

You may want to ask this question in the 7702 owners thread, as if they don't have the problem the users are not likely to check here.

In lieu of actual user feedback, I would not expect the 7702 to be effected. This press release (Link) states they released a firmware to update the 7701 (and other effected models), while the 7702 is not mentioned.

I'm having this issue on my PC. Glad to see it can be fixed on my PS3 though, will get on that tomorrow. It just started happening lately, really obnoxious.

However, how do I fix it on PC? I can't select audio options on PC for Netflix.

Denin 1712 / 2112, issues on bother when watching Netflix.

Getting ready to pick up a Pioneer VSX-830-K for my mother and I was wondering if anyone has heard of any DD+ issues with this model?

Thanks

Looks like the IEC wants to charge for the full 61937-3 spec but from reading the contents it covers e-ac3 (DD+) and commenters on th spec say it covers a limited bandwidth version of DD+

The new Vizio P series also supports DD+ with Atmos over HDMI ARC. Seems like a real benefit to not converting stream to plain Dolby digital.

On a side note, bought a Denon Heos soundbar for the bedroom and it has distortion from DD+ on netflix. Pretty disappointing a fairly new product from Denon still has this issue.

So you guys are STILL seeing this DD+ distortion issue on new Denon products? Seriously? My original post was in 2013...wow.

I have the same issue with NAD T-753 receiver (around 2005).
It's been rock solid until I watch Netflix with DD+.
I hear crackling noise from different speakers. I can reproduce it everytime. The same speaker at the same time.
The streaming source is connected to receiver via digital coaxial cable (S/PDIF) since NAD T-753 has no HDMI support.
I'm pretty sure it's decoding issue. I'm just not sure which device is the issue.

I was using a Sony Blu-ray player at first. Then I tried 2 other Samsung Blu-ray players. The same issue.
Then I tried XBOX ONE, no issue. I thank it's because XBOX ONE converts the digital output to either DD or DTS. I tried both options. Neither one has issue.

I tried a bit more testing with Samsung player, there was an option to convert the digital out to DD or DTS. So, I tried that. I could see the source switch between DD and DTS from the receiver.
Then I tried to watch Netflix on the same Samsung player with digital output set to DTS. Nope.... the receiver still saw DD. I'm guessing the Netflix app striping the DD from the DD+ stream and output that directly to the digital out by-passing Samsung codec.

I chatted with Netflix support multiple times and got different answers. Nothing really helps.
Seems like the only option that I have is upgrade my receiver.

I just now discovered this on my 2015 Denon 3200. This is frankly unacceptable as I watch a ton of Netflix. I wish I could return the receiver for another one. Not even stereo works with Netflix, constant auto dropping out no matter what settings. In the meantime I'll have to wait for a 4k HDR with Dolby vision streaming device to spend more money on when I shouldn't have to.

Um... wow.
Still? Heos is supposed 'new thinking' and they're still not on board with DD+?

So for anyone visiting this thraed in the future, after using a few HDMI cables with my Denon 3200x that claimed they were HDMI Premium Certified (even from Monoprice), I bought a Club3D HDMI Premium Certified HDMI cable from amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and it appears my issue has been solved. DD+ from HDMI ARC. HOORAH!

EDIT: Spoke too soon. IT was working perfectly.... shut off my Denon and turned it back on. Issue persists.

Just bought a Denon x3300 and Netflix streams DD+ fine from my Roku 3 and Panasonic Blu Ray player. I haven't had problems with the Denon AVR-591, 2809 or 1613 either.

Using the Samsung UBD-K8500 and Denon AVR-X7200WA running the most recent firmware, I have not experienced any issues with the Netflix Dolby Digital + stream on Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl. I'll report back if other shows are affected.
