A friend is looking for an integrated amplifier but his budget limits him to a maximum of $600. He has not picked out speakers yet but assume 87 dB or higher efficiency. Any recommendations?

Options include:
- Marantz PM5004 ($449, shipped, at Amazon.com)
- Yamaha A-S500 ($399, shipped, at Amazon.com)
- a gently-used vintage integrated amp off a used-goods site (audiogon.com, usaudiomart.com, craigslist, etc.)

^Agreed.

Also in the new category is the new Onkyo A-9050, which I saw on sale at Amazon for $299.

In the gently used category, these should come in at or below budget:
Cambridge Audio 650A or 550A (no turntable inputs on these!)
NAD C326BEE or C356BEE (no turntable input on 326, option on 356)
Marantz PM8004
Yamaha A-S700
Rotel RA-1520

For every new thing I learn, I forget two things I used to know.

The recommendation of Marantz PM flavor amps is a good one but, if he can stretch just a tiny bit further, he could get the new PM6005 ($699). The main reason for wanting a PM6005 over any other PM series amps is that it has digital inputs and a great DAC. I use one with 88dB efficient Salks and, even playing at levels I would consider very loud, I have not gone past one third volume on the dial.

Thanks for the input! Right now it looks like the PM6004 is the lead candidate.

That's a great option. Since the PM6005 was released, the PM6004 is heavily discounted on Amazon. Another thing to consider is, depending on his setup, an AVR in that price range. If he has 8Ohm speakers, a Marantz NR1402 is pretty darn nice. Same form factor/power and gets you some basic room correction, a proper sub out and, surprisingly, support for an external amp for the left and right if you want it. I've got a PM6004, PM6005 and NR1402 in my house. I don't currently use the NR1402 but, it's such a nice piece of gear that I can't bear to part with it.
