Ordered one of the Emotiva XPA-5 Gen 2 amps on Thursday, they are on sale for $100 off, I'm pumped. It gets delivered tomorrow along with the one of the trigger units, and rack ears. I can just get some regular RCA's from Monoprice to go from the Onkyo 818 to the amp correct? Im going to use some crappy Red/White cables that I have in the old "Wire Box" that everybody seems to accumulate over time, until I get some decent ones online.

I want to use the amp so I can run a 9.2 setup, does anybody have a rule of thumb for how high the Front Height speakers should go? I bought a pair of speakers to mount either in the walls, or in the ceiling for heights but I'm not exactly sure how high I am supposed to mount them. Do they get mounted the same width as the fronts, just straight up higher on the wall?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Can I ask what speakers you are using and why you bought a amp?

I have a 818 with Logan motion 12 fronts 4 motion 10s for sides and rears a motion c center and r subs.

My center channel seems to be lacking and sounds distorted at high volume I wonder if it's because lack of power

The 818 can do 7.2 natively, but to do 9.2 it needs an external amp, So I bought the 5 channel amp to power the 3 fronts, and 2 side surrounds, then I will let the receiver power the remaining 4. Our 818's power rating is 135w/channel when there is only 2 channels driven, the more speakers we hook up, the lower the power to each one is.

I have Klipsch speakers all the way around in my setup, RB-61's for fronts, RC-62 for center, and RS-41's for sides and surrounds, then 2 PSA XV-15 subs.

Ahhh I see so are subs included in those what's or no since I have powered subs?

So adding 5 more speakers takes it down to like 40 watts a per channel then?

The powered subs have their own amp built in, all they do is receive the signal and the amp takes care of the rest.
I'm not sure what the total wattage per channel after I hook all my speakers actually is, but Im guessing its pretty low.

Did you get your XPA-5 and get it mounted in a rack? If so, how did you mount the rack ears on the gear?

Look around on Amazon for close outs on component cables (RGB) and just don't use one of them.

As for the amp. It's way bigger than it looks online, and it's absolutely a boat anchor. Not all entertainment centers are good to hold it.

I bought the Amp, and already had a MA Slim rack to mount it in, I ordered the rack ears for that amp and it mounted up perfect. Almost gave myself a hernia trying to lift it in the rack myself, I bribed the neighbor with Beer to come and help me install it. I also bought the UPA-700 to power the rest of the surround speakers.

Thumbs up for rack-mounting heavy gear. However, I hope you have active ventilation for these amps...?

Otherwise, please help your nice new amps live longer by giving them several inches of clearance space.

Primary (2.1): Thiel CS 1.2 / Velodyne F1000 sub / Adcom GFA-555 Mk2 / Rotel 970BX / Sony CDP-CA9 ES
Secondary (5.1): Paradigm Mini-Monitor v.3 / CC270 v.3 center / ADP-170 v.2 surrounds /
SVS SB1000 sub / Marantz SR-6010 / AppleTV + Win7 PC / BenQ BL3200PT

Nice! I just picked up a XPA-7 from and AVS member and have now ordered an XPA-5 too! I'll post pics once I get them in a rack.

Agree on sticking at least a 1U spacer if not 2U above the amps to give them some breathing room, and fans would help circulate cool air past them.

Well..I just racked my XPA-7 using the URE-5 ears. There were no instructions with the kit, soI left the feet on. A minimum of 1U is required if the feet stay on. I'm putting a vented 2U below the XPA5, a vented 2U between the XPA5 and XPA7, and a vented 1U above the XPA7 before a 4U with my new AVM60. I'll post some pics once I get the XPA5 racked.

Here's some pics of racking the XPA-7 and blanking panels. Note, you can see the XPA-7 feet behind the 2U vented panel.
