I'm using a Sony PS3 which is connected via an optical connection to a Rotel RSX-1067 AVR. With this setup I'm limited to only the DD and DTS formats on DVD and BluRay discs. I've seen that it's possible to make the PS3 output high resolution audio over HDMI (force it to output bitstream over HDMI), but the RSX-1067 doesn't have HDMI inputs... I believe the RSX-1067 supports 24/96 digital audio up to eight channels, but so far I've only been able to use 2ch 24/96 audio. My tv (Philips 32pfl9606h) has a number of HDMI inputs and a digital audio ouput over Toslink. I've contemplated the idea of letting the PS3 output all audio over HDMI and have my tv route that audio to the Rotel RSX-1067 via a Toslink cable.
My question is:
Will this setup give me access to HD digital audio streams on BluRay discs, or will the bandwidth of TosLink still limit me to compressed formats? Has anyone tried something similar and can anyone supply me with some info on what I can do to get all the HD audio fun from BluRays (except buying a newer receiver)?
Thanks a million!
