Simaudio has recently disclosed that their $18,000 CP-8 Pre/Pro was, in practice, a modified $1,199 Denon AVR-2808CI. But, they say this has been well-known for some time…

“We don’t hide it. It’s a Denon engine under the hood, and I say it with pride, because it’s reliable and a Denon engine is a high-performance engine.”

You can read the details here:

So, are there any Simaudio Moon CP-8 owners out there? When you bought your CP-8, did you consider it well-known that it was a modified Denon?

The audiophools that paid that much for a prepro only to find out it isn't what they thought it was are going to be unhappy. Its kind of like buying what you thought was a Porsche but discovered was a gussied up VW instead.

When all else fails - RTFM!

A marketing company disguised as a designer and manufacturer. Fairly common in high end audio. There is or was a Parasound amp disguised in Mark Levinson attire. It is an industry that caters to well heeled egos. It is exactly the same thing as women paying $5000 for a designer purse. It all started in the 1960's. Before that engineering companies were the norm.

Yep. Btw, I thought it was an ATI amp disguised as a Mark Levinson? Lexicon is also guilty of this with using Oppo.

I'm sure you are correct. But the point is the same. Sorry for the error.

I think one other important distinction is that this was all done without Denon's permission. If ATI is selling their boards to be rebranded, that's one thing. But, if it's done without permission, that may not be illegal, but certainly is questionable ethically.

Now, the issue of patent and trademark is another. Simaudio had potentially modified the effects of Audyessy , among other technologies, in their redesign. If the final product has not been re-certified, but is still being represented as an official Audyssey product, they could potentially be doing damage to the brand.

Selling someone else's product at 10 times the price of that product is unethical without any question at all. Sim Audio and similar companies should be put out business if they don't manage to do that by themselves.

Actually Audyssey already knows about the facts. Here's how Chris Kyriakakis (CTO of Audyssey) commented: "Sim Audio is NOT a licensee of Audyssey. We have no idea why they list us and are considering legal action.",...and..."As far as we can tell they are buying 5 yr old AVRs and slapping on a different chassis and power supply. Pretty shady stuff.. " (FB/ Audyssey Tech Talk)
