Quick version:

Is it more worth it to get a better receiver with no amp, or a lesser quality (but still good) receiver with an amplifier?

Long version:

I get a great discount on Marantz units through my job and am about to upgrade my sound system a fair bit.

Next paycheck, I'll be ordering a pair of Polk RTI A7 towers and am currently running off of a Sony STR-DN840 receiver. The setup will just be two channel for now (the two Polks), but I'll likely get a center later on.

I'll be using this setup mostly for music, with movies/TV as an added bonus.

With my budget, I am stuck between these three options:

1. Marantz SR-6008 Receiver

2. Marantz NR-1604 Receiver & PM-6005 Amplifier

3. Marantz AV-7701 Reciever/Amplifier

Which would be the better option in your opinion?

Thanks!

The 5008 and 6008 both feature the more advanced version of Audyssey MultEQ XT vs. just MultEQ on the 1604. They also both feature a full set of pre-outs vs. only 2.1 on the 1604. Unless the 6008 offers a feature you require not offered on the 5008, the 5008 is likely the best choice of the 3 models. External amp not likely required although can always be added at a later date if desired.

Edited because I realized there's a third option.

Thanks for the response jdsmoothie!

The AV7701 is a pre-pro so would require an external amp to power all speakers connected.

Ah woops, missed that...

Would there be any distinct advantage in jumping up to the SR-7007 vs the 5008/6008 other than added inputs/outputs?

So far, the SR-5008 is sounding like the best bet.

Here's a handy way to compare the 3 models:

http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/CompareTo.aspx?compareItems=01|642SR5008&compareItems=01|642SR6008&compareItems=01|642SR7007&g=10420

The '7007 has more powerful amplifiers (+25W per channel; 2 channels driven), a built-in HD Radio tuner, multi-room HDMI output and a fancier remote.
