I'm setting up a home theatre on a near-zero budget and really need a bit of help.

So far I have:

NLP NEC NP200 projector (£37)

Denon AVR 3803 receiver (£100)

Mac G5 (already own)

2 x B&W 602 (already own)

2 x Wharfedale Diamonds (£50)

Wharfedale cubes (£40)

And that's me pretty much spent out.

2 questions to start off with

1. The Denon AVR3803 has no remote control. Can I control all the functions from the front panel or do I need to get a remote?

2. I can't get my head around the 5.1 sound processing. What's the easiest/cheapest way to get 5.1 sound from the AVR? can I play dvd's direct from the computer (it has DVI,  optical ports and USB) with the receiver doing the processing or do I need a fancy sound card or a dedicated DVD player or a smart TV box or something?

Hopefully someone out there knows!

An optical connection from your computer should support Dolby Digital, which is what DVDs generally use—so yes, direct playback with the receiver doing the processing should work.

I think you'll wind up with a great-sounding system. Hopefully another member knows the answer regarding the remote control.

Thanks Mark - that's great news!

So the data would be coming directly from the file/disc/stream (via the optical prt) to the Denon which then does it's thing.

Is there a quality benefit (or even a deficit) for running the video through the receiver  - or is it just so that you can have multiple sources and a single cable running to the projector?

(edit to clarify)

The AVR does audio and video switching as well as decoding the audio stream coming from the computer. There isn't any benefit since nearly all tvs and displays these days have their own video scaling. It does allow the AVRs that have GUI to display on screen the menus for setup volume etc. Not many are without GUI any more.

Thanks Knucklehead, the role of the AVR seems much clearer now.

The Denon hasn't arrived yet but from the spec sheet it has GUI so I'll probably run the signal through and out using a DVI to component video cable.

I'm guessing from all this info that the weakness in our system (there had to be one!) will be the video card in the G5 which is pretty old and possibly the super basic CD/DVD/Bluray external player that we'll be relying on to watch discs.

The big question remaining is the AVR 3803 remote - am I going to need one?
