Hi guys.

Later next year, my plans are to add a Denon 4520ci to the mix for it's amplifier section, XT32 and ability to EQ two subs. My understanding, the AV8801 is the Marantz equivalent. At a thousand dollars more, is there any benefit to purchasing the AV8801 over the 4520ci or will the less expensive 4520ci do just as well?

I'm also looking at purchasing a rehab'd 4520ci as it's another thousand dollars cheaper.

Thanks in advance. FWIW, I hang out on the subwoofer forum.

the 8801 is a prepro where the 4520 is an avr. both come from the same parent company and both are similarly feature packed. they both have xt32. i highly doubt either is sonically superior to one another.. get whichever one is cheaper at time of purchase.

I don't need snobs to tell me how to think, thank you!

The Marantz equivalent to the Denon 4520 is the SR7008. I recently purchased this and absolutely love it. Last night I watched "Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End" and it sounded incredible. If I had one complaint it would be that the sub calibration seems way too low. I increased my sub level by 7db just to sound normal again.

eek.gif...My apologies as I was recently told the AV8801 was the Marantz equivalent of the Denon 4520ci.

Currently, we're using the Marantz SR5008 but it only comes with XT. To make up for the shortcomings of XT, we added Anti-Mode 8033S II.

From what I've read, the Denon 4520ci has a very, very robust amplifier section, good down to two ohms.

(biggrin.gif...like you, currently, we have our sub levels raised +6dB.)

You are correct. Although the SR7008 is a 9CH model, it is the sister model to the Denon AVR-X4000 while the 4520CI has a better build and amp section and is the sister model to the AV8801 pre-pro.

its close. denon doesn't have a prepro currently but if they did id imagine it being essentially the 4520 minus the amps.

Gotta leave for the Seattle/Arizona game.

(edited the title to reflect what you guys said about the SR7008)

In checking with Amazon, the SR7008 is being sold for $2,000.00 and the Denon 4520ci is being sold for $2,500.00.

...confused.gif

What's with that? I would expect the SR7008 to cost more than the 4520ci.

...confused.gif

(rereading jdsmoothie's response, it reads as if the 4520ci is an amalgam of both the AV8801 and the SR7008 or the best of both of these units.)

Am I understanding this point correctly?

So, at this price point, is the Denon AVR 4520ci the best thing going?

Is the 4520ci an amalgam of the AV8801 and the SR 7008?

(need to know as expectedly, this is going be a tax refund purchase)

i'd say the 4520 is the 8801 with amps. the 7008 is the x4000 with a marantz name plate. there are minor difference of course.

unless there is a specific feature you desire from one of the others, the x4000 is the best bang for the buck of this bunch.

Although close in terms of features, as previously noted, the 4520CI is a higher level model than is the 7008.

I'm looking to the 4520ci for it's very robust amplifier section as from the test I've read (home theater shack) my understanding, it's stable down to 2ohm for those very difficult passages.

For convenience sake, I don't want separates, although at this price, I may be forced to consider separates. I've considered a Emotiva XPA-5 but have not idea what Pre/Pro to go with that has Audyssey XT32. And due to price savings, I'm giving consideration to a refurbished model.

At a refurbished price, for the features and amplifier section, this seems like the AVR to buy. confused.gif

In this regard and to my above, am I missing anything and should I be looking elsewhere?

jdsmoothie, do you guys have refurbished pricing on a 4520ci and can you guys do better pricing than list? In this case, if I can keep the money at home, that's a good thing.

In this respect, the 4520CI is the better buy as the 7008 is not designed to power 4-ohm speakers at reference volume levels whereas the 4520CI is.

If your purchase decision hinges on getting a refurbished unit, I would tip in favor of the X4000. My SR7005's HDMI board cooked after about a year. The refurbished board they sent me cooked after about 8 months. The amps in the refurbished unit they sent me cooked after a few hours.

I am willing to entertain that I had bad luck on my first unit, but the fact that both companies offer refurbished warranties of only 1 year raises a very real red flag. I would never, ever buy a refurbished unit from either of these companies.

Which is not to say that their products suck. If Marantz sends me another refurb, I plan to flip it and pick up an X4000.

Thanks for the suggestion/warning waygorked. I've owned both Marantz and Denon products. Our current AVR is a Marantz SR5008.

I put an order in today with AVS sales for a new 4520ci, so I have a full factory warranty. If anybody is entertaining the idea of buying a Denon 4520ci, my recommendation would be to give JD a call "TODAY" and see what he can do for you. If interested in a 4520ci, don't pass go, pickup the phone and make the call so you can do a price check.

Thanks for the service and the taking of our order JD. Early next year, we're looking forward to the arrival of our new baby.

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you.

I'm using 4 ohm Martin Logan Motion series speakers and my 4520 has plenty of power for reference level volume and beyond ( which is generally too loud anyway ) !! I think you're going to love it once you get it dialed in !! smile.gif

I am so stoked on this order. I'm not sure why but in my opinion and as you pointed out, there's something special about the 4520CI's amplifier section.

With our current AVR, a Marantz SR5008, as action sequences ramp up, the amplifier can't keep up with our Klipsch Epic CF-3s and one can hear the life get sucked out of the sound track. Very discouraging. With the addition of the 4520CI, I expect this problem to be corrected for and we'll have a really nice AVR for a backup.

Does a pair of Rythmik FV15HPs qualify? tongue.gif

(never had a flagship AVR before)

(Just saying, when dealing with AVS, for those interested in a 4520ci, screaming good deal to be had by giving them a call)

I am so looking forward to having this amplifier power our speakers. To have XT32 and SubEQ HT is going be a huge add to the overall sound quality and aid the integration of our subs into the acoustics of the living room.

Yeah baby! Dancing banana time.
