Happy New Year to all. I'm building a humble 5.1 system in our living room. We just bought a new Panasonic 60" VT60 and I'm looking at the Marantz NR-1604. I'm confused and a little ignorant about 4K up scaling. The 1604 has 4k up scaling, does that mean it converts a 1080p cable signal to 4K? Were on ATT U-Verse for cable, if that makes a difference.

I guess my question is, will I see any benefit from buying the 1604 over the 1504 as far as picture enhancement/quality goes? Obviously the VT60 is not a 4K tv, but will the up conversion on the NR-1604 give me any better of a picture? If the answer is no, I will save money and get the next model down NR-1504, which is a very similar receiver.

Thanks in advance.

Since you don't have a 4K TV it really doesn't matter.

If you're not concerned about 7.1, multizone audio or analog to HDMI video conversion then save your money and get the NR1504.

Thanks so much for the quick reply. As I read through your link, the only real difference is the 4k up conversion. The chart does say that the 1604 has HDMI to HDMI conversion and the 1504 does not. Are they referring to the 4k up scaling? My apologies if I'm repeating the same question, I'm just trying to educate myself as I go.

HDMI ---> HDMI upscaling refers to taking a 480i SD signal or 720p HD signal and upscaling it to 1080p. Also note that the 1504 does not include Zone 2 pre-outs to pass audio to another room (eg. bedroom, deck, patio, etc.). Regarding 4K, as afrogt notes, without upgrading to either a 4K TV or PJ, this feature would be moot.

Does this translate into a better picture from our UVerse cable box if I get the 1604? If I'm understanding correctly, the 1604 will take a 720p signal from our UVerse box and upscale it to 1080p? If that is the case, it may be worth getting it after all.

I'm asking this because I have read reviews over the years where people say that their picture quality dramatically improved when they upgraded to an up scaling receiver. I'm clear on the 4K question now, thank you very much.

Upscaling simply means the picture is resized from a smaller screen size to a larger screen size. In some cases (especially with SD channels) the picture will look worse when its blown up to 1080p. eek.gif Also, it's unlikely the 1604 will do a better job than will the VT60 at upscaling which is why many folks bypass the video processing in the AVR and simply pass it through to the TV. If you want better video then upgrade the source (ie. if you're using a SD cable box, upgrade to an HD cable box).

I just received my NR1504 yesterday and was curious about upgrading to the 1604 but like afrogt said, I don't have a 4K TV so it really doesn't matter. Did wiring yesterday, adding speakers today.

Anyone know if the 1504 has a night mode?

D&M models that use Audyssey include Audyssey Dynamic Volume which has 3 different settings. At night you'll likely want to set it to either "Medium" or "Heavy" for that particular source you are using. It will both boost the lower level dialogue as well as compress the louder explosions.

smoothy

My 1403 I'm very happy with but there are a few exceptions. Sometimes the rear surrounds are too loud. Live sports seem to be frequent offenders. Crown noise sometimes drowns out broadcasters. Other times the sub is way too loud on certain sources.

Anything to be done other than to use Dynamic volume?

Yes, but it's not a Dynamic Volume issue rather a Dyn Eq issue. If you are using this feature for TV watching, also set the Dyn EQ Reference Level Offset to 10 or 15 which will reduce the surround boost from Dyn EQ at lower listening levels.

You sir, are a patient man. When our new VT60 was delivered two weeks ago, I had to let it sit in its giant box for two days in the living room until my visiting family left. Those two days seemed like forever.

Oh man...that's brutal!

I bought a Panny 55VT60 from Best Buy a week before Christmas and saw the 60VT60 went on sale on Christmas Eve for $200 more than I paid for the 55. I went by the store to see if I could exchange the 55 for the 60 and pay the $200 difference and they said "no problem". So I paid the difference and set up an appointment for a delivery exchange for the Dec 30th. When the 30th came...nothing, not a word from Best Buy. So I called them and must have talked to several people and finally reset an appointment for January 2nd. January 2nd comes and the delivery guy shows up to take the 55 and forgot the 60. I tell him he's not taking one unless he brings the new one. I get a call from Best Buy that evening and reschedule for the next day, January 3rd. It snows overnight but the roads are clear and I receive a call from Best Buy to reschedule because their warehouse is closed. So, next scheduled delivery is January 11th. I'm beginning to think someone is trying to tell me something!
