I have one of those old JVC MX-G50 boombox speakers from around 2000. I was wondering if they would work with a new receiver such as a Denon 1612? And would it sound much better than the old cd player they were hooked to? I don;t have a enough money right now to buy a receiver and 5.1 surround sound speakers. I've read it was good to start out with some bookshelf speakers until you can afford more speakers. Since I already have these would they work?

You may want to consider this setup from Monoprice as a better alternative to trying to jury rig your boom box ...

Yea I was looking at those. I just didn't know if I could plug just the speakers into my denon and not use the receiver part of the JVC.

In nearly every setup I've ever heard the speakers make or break it when it comes to sound quality. JD probably didn't want to say those speakers suck - but they probably do. You can try it but the Denon will only sound as good as the speakers you connect it to. And more often than not a better AVR won't make crappy speakers sound better either.

When all else fails - RTFM!
