I wish I had waited a couple of months:

http://www.kefdirect.com/ls50-open-box.html

$1299 for LS50s is a great deal.

I have the sc71 originally wired for 5.1 and 2 B speakers playing outside on the deck. I recently upgraded to 7.1 but have noticed that the B speakers that play outside no longer play. After contacting pioneer they tell me that it is not possible to have 7.1 hooked up and B outdoor speakers at the same time. I have told them that I would like to play the outside B speakers alone without playing the indoor 7.1, they say I should have bought a 9.1 system.
Who is not understanding? Is this system not possible to play outside speakers even though they are connected to the speaker posts on the rear of the receiver? They are telling me that the sc71 will work with 5.1 and 2 outside speakers but not 7.1 and 2 outside speakers, even if all I would like to do is to listen to music outside without playing inside.
Has anyone any ideas
Thanks

Okay, I'm really confused.  What difference does it make whether the speakers are outdoors or indoors?  If they are connected to the speaker posts -- and they are speakers -- I don't understand how it matters.  How can it work in 5.1 but not 7.1?  Someone with more knowledge than me, help pogytime and *I* out with this one.

I think it only supports a maximum of 7 channels. So, 5.1 + Bi-amped fronts, 5.1 + 2 "B" speakers, or 7.1.

have you changed your speaker configuration? you said you used the 5.1 + B speaker configuration. you'll need to change that to the one for 7.1 +B, config C in the speaker setup menu.

if you already did that, then carefully read what Pioneer says it will do:

LEAD Technologies Inc. V1.01

you can have simultaneous use of 5.1 in main room + B OR you can have 7.1 in the main room but no B but NOT 7.1 & B at the same time.

then you'll need to use the speaker selection button on your remote to switch between using A (7.1), B only , or A (5.1) + B speakers - pg. 69 in your manual:

LEAD Technologies Inc. V1.01

in the case you use A+B, the rears will be shut-off and not used.

if you wanted to have 7.1 AND B speakers to be producing sound at the same time, Pioneer is correct, you should have bought one of their 9 ch models.

a 7 ch receiver is exactly that - only 7 amps available - to be used according to the speaker configuration you selected in the setup menu.

as long as you are happy with using the B's by themselves or using B's & 5.1 at the same time, your receiver choice was good....it's only when you want 7.1 & B's on the same time is this receiver not going to do what you want.

clear, I hope?

Anyone know if the SC-71 is going to be replaced this year? Seems like the new models usually get announced around right now. Didn't know if I should pick up the SC-71 for $699, or wait for something better. What do you guys think?

for past several years, the top Elite models get announced from May-June-July and available July-Aug-Sept. this year, it could be on the longer end of that time frame due to possible "hyperchange" items (the theme of this year's CEDIA trade show)

yes, the top Elites will be replaced by new models.

Thanks. You think it's a good idea to get the SC-71 for $699 now? Or maybe the Denon X4000 for $950? I know new models will be out soon, but I'm not sure I really need any additional features. Is the difference of Audyssey MultEQ XT32 worth spending more on the Denon? Primary use is movies for me...

Most likely, the SC-71's successor will have HDMI 2.0 and a future form of MCACC that also equalizes bass. Are those worth $300 - 400 to you?

You can always add a DSpeaker Anti-mode to add room EQ for bass frequencies. HDMI 2.0 is a moot point to me... I don't have a 4k TV, though 4k capability would be nice for future-proofing.

EDIT: I should note, the SC-71 is HDMI 1.4a and should be able to pass through 4k video at 30 frames per second (fps). I say "should" because I have no way of personally validating it. My guess is the SC-71's successor will be HDMI 2.0 which is able to pass through 4k video at a full 60 fps.

That's the thing for me -- I can't think of any new technology on the horizon that's worth the extra money.  For how it's used in my house, I think I can get a few years more out of the SC-71.

Good Afternoon AVS Forum Members,

First off, thanks for providing new members like myself a place to learn about their equipment.

I am a new SC-71 owner can I have it connected to a Samsung 65" 7100 series LED.  Comcast Xfinity is my cable provider.

So, I'm hoping that someone can assist me.  I have it hooked up via the ARC (per manual) and all my other devices are connected to the receiver.  I have Definitive Technology ProCinema 800, 1000 Center, and 800 Sub, running a 5.1 setup.

I would like to know if it is possible to watch cable tv (like a game on espn) and listen to music at the same time, like streaming from iTunes over airplay?

This question came about last night when I had a few friends over and we wanted to watch the NBA Playoffs games, but still listen to the music over the speakers.  I couldn't figure this out.

Can anyone on this SC-71 Thread assist me.  I truly appreciate and thank you in advance.

I just purchased the SC-71 today.
Won't have it set up for another 10 days or so... I'll be back.
And I'm sure I'll have questions as this is my first receiver in over 15 years.
And my first Pioneer.

Looking forward to reading through the thread and learning about my new toy.

Hey guys, i bought a pioneer elite sc 71 from a amazon unauthorized dealer. The box was completely sealed and it has no signs of fingerprints or scuffs on the unit. What is the best way to make sure the receiver was never used? It turns on and everything seems ok, but i do not have my speakers yet.

Thanks

You need the Pioneer Elite devirginizer tester... wink.gif honestly I have no idea.. If the box is sealed and looks factory sealed, and the parts within also look factory sealed I would assume it's new. Also - to make sure all the MCACC profiles are blank (nothing saved in them).. I bought mine from an amazon reseller, "buy it again", and mine was brand new.

How can i make sure all the mcacc slots are blank? Do i do it from the avr or do i have to check when hooked into my tv? Also from what im gathering im goimg with some klipsch reference rf 82 fronts. The sub is.the klipsch sw-115. I will want to set the floor standing rf 82s to small right? I will be connecting to the lfe port on the sub. Also im.almost certain its a brand new unit because that little blue.tape on the cover was there also.

Thanks

If you are on memory profile 1 and all the speaker levels are all 0 (not +something or -something) then that's a safe bet MCACC hasn't been run. You can check that on the built in display with the remote's channel level button.. just cycle through all the channels. It should be setup for 7.1 by default.

Just stumbled onto this thread, figured I'd chime in that I also have this receiver. My previous Pioneer receivers have also had MCACC and I find that unless you really have large front speakers, (like MASSIVE) fronts, it's best to set the fronts to small to get a good bass setting after calibration. This receiver was no different. So far, very happy with it. Bought it primarily for the 4k pass through, as my next projector will be a 4k one.

I was pleasantly surprised by how clean the D3 amps sound. It's truly a big step forward in home theater receivers. For reference, I also have Pioneer's audiophile grade VSX-D1S, that I have always enjoyed the sound/power from. The SC-71 I think would hold it's own against it in terms of sound quality. One of these days I'll actually put that to the test, but since it's such a PITA to switch out receivers I will keep my opinion subjective for now. smile.gif

On my old VSX-43TX I could toggle through video sources while keeping the audio source constant. It was nice to be able to watch a ball game and listen to a CD or such at the same time. Is there a similar function on the SC-71? I've looked till my eyes crossed and can't find one.

Here's the function reference in the 43TX manual for a more detailed description.

Thanks in advance for any clarification.

^^ Wildoak - I don't know... it seems like the audio moves around with every input change... so I am guessing no but not sure.

Has anyone here used the stereo pre-outs on the SC-71? I am wondering if they only kick in for stereo playback... I am guessing that's the case otherwise they would have put a full 7.1 set of pre-outs. I have a pair of marantz mono blocks (ma-6100) that I am thinking about using for stereo only mode...

edit: from what the manual says it seems like those are front L and R RCA outs are 'hot' in all modes... it also suggests so set the speaker terminals for front L and R to off in the menu if using another amp (or amps) to drive them.

pre out --> rca --> amp. use your remote to cycle speaker on and off. attenuate volume furthest down the line (i.e. the amp).  make sense?

yeah thanks.. I decided to bi-amp my music only system so I am not going to bother with external amps on the SC-71. I think it sounds fine as it is actually. I am really happy with mine!!

Good to hear. I was trying to answer mykereid's question about how to "elegantly" connect a headphone amp.

Oh... HA! I thought you were talk'n to me.

man I am putting my SC-71 to the test today... the wife went to a Giant's game with her friend so I am home alone and been watching movies real loud all day and capping it off with some sci-fi. Pacific Rim's audio is so darn great... Oblivion's audio is good also. Both have tons of LFE and make use of all 7 channels extremely well.

edit: I have noticed that the SC-71 runs a bit warmer than my vsx-1020 did. Not hot, but on the warm side of warm after a long day of use.

Dear AVS: It's been 4 years since my last post.

Picked up an SC71 yesterday at magnolia after my old onkyo POS finally fried. They even threw in a new sub. Really huge improvement even before reading this thread. Got to watch a little TV and listen to a little music and everything is much clearer.

Thanks to everyone in this thread for all the information. Going to go home and switch sp size to small and re run mcacc with front align. Also going to setup pandora.

It's nice to have more than two hdmi inputs. I got rid of the hdmi switch and stopped running my directv through the xbox one.(that was driving my wife nuts)

Greetings all. I could use some advice about whether the SC-71 and SC-72 will suit my needs. I appreciate any advice you can share.

I'm replacing a Denon AVR-5800 that I bought in 2000. The Denon's subwoofer pre-out has gone bad and is no longer providing the signal. (I've tried various combinations of patch cables and another sub and determined it's the Denon that's failed.)

Anyway, the Denon is a beast of a receiver, and cost me a pretty penny when I bought it 14 years ago. If I can, I'd like to go a less expensive route to replace it. The question is, can the SC-71 or (if necessary) the SC-72 drive my speakers sufficiently? One of the primary reasons I like these receivers is the relative coolness of the Class D amp. The Denon puts off a lot of heat, and my HT gets pretty toasty, especially in the summer.

Here's my speaker configuration. All speakers are Miller & Kreisel which I purchased in 2000.

Fronts: 750 THX. Here are the specs:
Impedance: 4 ohms
Recommended power: between 50 and 200 watts RMS or more
Maximum power: 200 watts RMS unclipped peaks
Frequency response: 80 Hz - 20 KHz plus/minus 2db

Rear surrounds: 550 THX
Side surrounds: 55 tripoles
Sub: 350 THX

Other info:
- I need to send unpowered audio to a multizone amplifier for another audio zone
- The primary use of this system is movies

For comparison, here are the specs on the Denon I'm replacing:
- Power: Stereo, 2 channel: 170W at 8 ohms
- Dynamic Power: 190W, 8ohms, 310W, 4ohms

Thanks again for any input you can provide.
