My 3 year old Pioneer VSX 1020 K just died on me(Blue light of death)

Looking for Good receiver under $500

Requirement that it must have:

7.2 Surround sound
PreAmp Out

Don't care too much about 2nd zone.

Any help will be appreciated.

I'm a fan of Denon in the $500 range, but Newegg was having a great deal on the Yamaha recently.

For a Denon in your price range you may have to go the refurb route. Don't know of any newer models in your price range with pre-outs. Go to www.accessories4less.com and search for something from either Denon or Marantz in your range. Should be able to find something in your price range and meets your requirements. Of course it will be a refurbed model but still has a warranty. Good luck.

Do you require 2.1 pre-outs or 7.1 pre-outs as the lower level Marantz models have 2.1 pre-outs (eg. 1504, 1503, etc.)? The lowest level Denon models with main zone pre-outs are the 331XCI series and the new X4000.

I've never purchased from them. It seems that many members here have though and very few complaints that I've read about. They come with a warranty and an extended can be purchased if you want.

A good one to check out below. A little over budget but not a lot over.

A review for you to read.

http://www.soundandvision.com/content/sony-str-dn1040-av-receiver

The AVR's at accessories for less are all refurbs. Sometimes they will have older models that are new but few and far between. That 5007 does have the things you wanted but yes it is a refurb. I also believe that for the money the Yamaha 773 mentioned by rnatalli is the best buy at this time.

Base on the review the 1040 is not bad...

Now I have to pick between this and the Yahama.

Go to the dedicated threads here and read what owners of each have to say. That price for the 773 is awesome and Yamaha reliability is second to none IMO.

My vote goes to the Yamaha RX-A830. It has everything you wanted in your first post. Also the Aventage comes with 3 year warranty.

Don't know that it's better, it has the pre-outs you want and connectivity is there also. The warranty is no big deal because I don't know that you will need it with either. The thing with some others may be Audyssey vs. YPAO. To me it doesn't mean a thing. Your other choice of the Yamaha 775 is also a good one but IMO the price of the 773WA is much better and also does what 775 will do. I'm a Yamaha fan and the Denon fans may weigh in with their opinions as to why the X3000 would be a better choice. I certainly would not choose one over the other though due to their EQ program. If it has the connectivity and other things you want/need then that's the way to decide.

You are definitely in a tier up from your original post. You've posted several options which you typically could not buy anywhere close to $500.

I'll take the Denon AVR-X3000 for $500. I'm more interested in the second zone then the pre-outs. I've also gotten the impression from the reviews that I've read that the Denon interface is more modern, and it has true Audyssey, not a proprietery set up (not that there is anything wrong with that).

Yes but the 3808 is a much better built piece than any of these on his list. IIRC it's what the 4311 was when it came out. With todays Denon's for the same build quality you would probably looking at the 4520 for a comparison. I'm not taking its version of Audyssey into consideration as compared to the models of today of course but it's also not the reason IMO to choose one AVR over another. JMHO.

I'm in the same boat. I am planning on buying the Yamaha from NewEgg but I just wanted to check in on a question. YEARS ago I found Yamaha's to be really bright and had a real problem with them. I have been using mid level Onkyo's (700/800) for a while but their quality control has finally allowed me to look elsewhere. Anyone with a 773 think it is overly bright? Does the room correction do anything to alleviate this?

I would hate for an old prejudice to come between me and a good value.

Primary goals are 3D switching, more HDMI inputs/outputs; power (coming from an Onkyo 806 which has some oomph), must have 7.1 (prefer 7.2), future proofing with 4k passthrough, would like a usable GUI (LOooove the Sony 1040 on this front but HATE the HDMI issues which are way too reminiscent of recent issues).

Wharfedale Sapphire 89 Fronts
Wharfedale C
JBL surrounds
Earthquake 15"

Acer 9500BD PJ

TIA!

I have the 773 and after running the ypao software the flat eq does sound bright to me.
There are other choices though that sound better. I prefer natural or you can select none (through)
or copy any default eq to manual and custom tweak all you want. All of which is fun to play with.

The 773 is almost 2 years old now. The new models come out about april or may every year. After that some 2013 models will finally start seeing some decent discounts. The fact that newegg carries this and only this model way below amazon means they probably bought out the last huge batch. And the fact that they limit 1 per customer probably means they are running low. They could sell out soon. They usually discount it even more ($20) on weekends. The 2013 model (775) is currently $350 more than the 773 and they are almost identical. Maybe try calling them?

Ordered one for myself and so did a buddy.  Just hoping we don't have issues with the HDMI board.  Was looking at Denon's for a long time but this has all the features I want.
