Looking for the best Amp on an Elite receiver. As far as I know SC-79/77 haven't changed much in amp section vs. SC-68/67... any exact differences in Amp section between SC-79, 77, 68, and 67? The THX Ultra must have better amp, no? I am trying to drive B&W 805 series speakers, XTC center, M1 rears, a second zone, and possibly a Sonos extension.

I am trying to find an older SC-68, which is impossible to find, but then maybe able to find an SC-67 and obviously SC-77/79 is available... is it worth the extra $$? 68 might have been a good sweet spot with USB input but it's very hard to find.

I have the new sc-79 and really like it. I also have the sc-09tx. Hard to believe but the sc79 does sound better to me, except looks very cheap looking to the sc09tx. The sc09tx is the first gen ice power amp, and the sc79 is D3.

I running the atlantic 8200e 7.2 system and sounds great

The amp sections look to be the same and all the top of the line is Ultra ll so I would think you will be fine.

Thanks, here's the weird part:

- SC-79: 150* 9 -THX Ultra 2, Air Studio, 38.75 lbs
- SC-77: 140* 9 -THX Ultra 2, Air Studio, 33 lbs
- SC-68: 140* 9 -THX Ultra 2, Air Studio, 39.2 lbs
- SC-67: 140* 9 -THX Select 2, Air Studio, 38.36 lbs

To me, it looks like SC-77 has lighter power supply, while others are quite heavier and must be closer together, YET, SC-77 is rated THX Ultra2, while SC-67 is rated only Select 2?

Yeah, or was it based on business decision? Just NOT to request is to be certified so they can differentiate the products more?

I can get SC-67 for $600 lower than SC-77, is it worth the extra cost to go for SC-77?

Guys, any last minute advice? I am about to purchase either SC-67 or 77 both at a good price, with around $500 more for the SC-77... is it worth the extra?

Bump

Also linking to this review (which covers the 2014 Elites) which I felt was helpful at least as far as SC-67 vs SC-68:

Thanks. If I could find sc68, that'd been my choice, but can't. Can get 67 or 75, 77. And would like to know if extra 500-600 is worth it for sc-77

I would have preferred a 68 as well, however there's just none around at this point. I did find a 57 still new in the box, and just purchased it.

Seller on eBay. Search SC-57 completed auctions. Bought a 4 year Square Trade warranty from Amazon too.

I just visited a Magnolia store and checked out some of the latest Elite receivers. OH BOY are they built cheap now... WTF! The material used is all around cheaper than models prior to SC-37, I just don't understand WHY the screen has to protrude OUT along with the cover for the front controls... why couldn't it have been flushed? like all of their older ones... and also, the volume and input control material is soooo cheaply made, makes my 7yr old Elite feel like 10 times more expensive.

Really disappointed! Elite has always been my goto receiver, and I have been very loyal, I just don't get it. Maybe for lower models, but even the SC-75, 77 are made the same way. Really terrible decision on their behalf, specially when asking for $2000-3000 for the units.

Everything has historically changed to lighter and cheaper. I really don't think there's any way around it. The new Yamaha receivers are way lighter than my old RX-Z11. My 60" LG plasma is way lighter than plasma's from 5 years ago. Even My 15 year old Elite CLD-99 top of the line LD player is way lighter than earlier units. This is nothing new. I know what you mean-I just don't think there's anyway things will change back in this respect. Sooner or later our old "built like a tank" electronics fail, and you are forced to replace them or go without. wink.gif

Not the weight necessarily, it still weighs 38 lbs, the actual materials used for the knobs, the chassis, the buttons, etc... but I think the worst by far was the Volume knob, and the actual screen and cover that protrude OUT of the device! Like WHY???

I would say they make changes purely so things don't stay the same. Probably for marketing reasons, productions costs, and who knows what logic. I've bought a 2 or more year old model more than once because i didn't care for the direction the new models had taken.

Power wise they are all equal. The difference between 125 watt vs 200 watt is around a little over 2 db.
