so i wanted to update my receiver, since my f/w is super old.

went ahead and found the latest version from the onkyo website.

formated a usb 3 128gb drive to FAT, dragged the files on.

plugged it in, clicked on USB waited 30 sec, clicked home, and then firmware update... and nada, no option of "update" or anything else.

i followed the instructions provided to the T

http://redirect.onkyousa.com/redirect_service.cfm?type=own_manuals&file=Firmware_Update_for_the_TXNR818_10_18_13.pdf

so then i figured may fat isnt compatible, tried NTFS.

then, maybe the onkyo cant read usb 3, fine, found a usb 2 4gb drive, tried FAT and NTFS.

tried all this formatting copying on windows and mac.

any ideas?

The literature is incorrect. Try the procedure here posted in this thread at the Onkyo support web site:

I got an 818 the 8th, updated the firmware same day, no issues. Used this as a guide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNM-N-JiT-g Unfortunately, the 818 developed an audio issue a week later & I returned it to OneCall for a replacement. Hope to have it back this time next week & will prob update firmware again just for grins.
