The manual isn't so clear on this (imagine that). Here's the situation - I have 2 A/V rooms in the house. The primary one has all the input sources (Apple TV, BD, computer, etc). All inputs & outputs are HDMI. This primary A/V room has a Denon AVR991 sending HDMI video to a projector. The 2nd room has a Marantz NR1403 driving a 2nd 1080p Epson projector.

The problem is audio is not getting to A/V room 2 over the HDMI cable (video is fine). If we plug the HDMI cable directly into the room 1 source (such as Apple TV), we get audio and video in room 2, so the cable is good. But the audio disappears when we insert the AVR 991 in the signal flow path. Should this be working or does the 991 just not output audio over HDMI? I have read the manual on the HDMI settings in particular and it isn't clear to me whether this should work. Hopeful to find a solution as cable is buried in ceiling - no separate audio cables were run!  thanks!

Hi aducarrab, the AVR-991 has a HDMI Audio Out setting which you can output audio either to speakers connected to the Amp or to TV speakers but not both at the same time.

You can set the HDMI out on the Denon to AMP or TV.

If you set it to AMP the audio stops there and you'll hear audio on your speakers. If you set it to TV the audio is sent to an external source but you won't be able to process any audio on the 991.

There are (2) HDMI main zone monitor outputs on the 991 which are most often used when there is a TV and PJ in the same room. As noted above, audio cannot be sent to the surround speakers and TV speakers at the same time which is still common on Denon AVRs to this day for the main zone outputs. A Zone 2 monitor output was first introduced in 2012 on the 3313CI in which audio/video can be passed to a Zone 2 TV or AVR while another source plays in the main zone using the surround speakers. This feature is also found on the more current X3000 and X4000 models as well. You may want to consider using an HDMI switch by Monoprice.

Thanks all for the replies. So I did try that HDMI setting both ways; 'Amp' and 'TV' (ideally it'd be nice to see a 'both' setting, but as you have noted, that functionality isn't in the 991). Anyway, even when set to 'TV', I don't get the audio in room 2. I wonder if the TV setting simply disables the amp, but they still expect you to run a separate audio line to the TV?

The TV can likely only accept a stereo 2.0 signal so you would have to turn Dolby Digital to OFF on the source and only pass stereo.

The HDMI cable in room 2 is connected to the Marantz AVR, not a TV. This should be able to decode the audio correct?
