I used it and liked the results, but I will say I didn't spend much time on out of the box settings because I ran ypao right away.

BTW I got new egg to "price match" the offer.

They are sending the speakers right now for free. YMMV

The opening credits / splash screens for transformers 3 on blu ray were an eargasm tbh.

I recently purchased the v577 from Frys for $299. Have not set it up yet and became somewhat worried about the lack of HDMI 2.0. I then visited Yamahas EU site and in the Features tab I noticed HDMI 2.0 will be available via firmware update.

Quote:
Support for HDMI 2.0 Specification

This model will support HDMI 2.0 connectivity*.
It will support 4K Ultra HD 50 Hz/60 Hz signal pass-through to output motion-smooth high definition videos.

*Firmware update will be available to support this feature.

Hi. Any thoughts on the Yamaha RX-V677 vs. Denon AVR-S900W? I ordered the Yamaha because Newegg had that great deal that included the Polk 5.1 speaker package for free. I don't really need the speakers, but figure I could sell them and make some money back.

Interested in hearing everyone's thoughts.

Thanks.

Yamaha RX-V677 vs. Yamaha TSR-6750WABL

Any opinion on the RX-V677 vs. the older Yamaha TSR-6750WA? The older model came in at a much higher original price but can be had for <$400 now. The specs look very similar.

I setup my 677 last night. I used the YPAO configuration and it seemed to do a nice job based on my room; it bumped up the right side slightly louder than the left side. I'm assuming it did this because of my stair case behind the tv on the right side.

When initially setting up my peripherals, I basically followed the suggestions from the manual... I connected my cable box into the receiver HDMI 2 port and have the HDMI video out going to my TV. Maybe I am missing a setting or something, but I'm disappointed because if I turn off the receiver, I can't watch the cable box. I kinda of assumed this would have HDMI passthru when turned off. I don't always want to have the receiver on to watch TV.

Am I missing something or is this expected?

Need to have "Standby Through" enabled. See page 107 of the Owner's Manual.

Separately/FYI, there is a firmware update available for your unit.

I'm just a caveman. Your modern world frightens and confuses me.

Thank you for the reply. I will check out that setting.

Appreciate the heads up; I did notice that too when playing on the Yamaha A/V app. I was slightly hesitant to get it at the time of getting everything initially setup (late last night), but I will get that today.

Looks like the RX-V677 - 1.20 Firmware Update is for the following:
1. Improves stability of AirPlay playback
2. Includes other functional improvement

I am loving my v377. I ran YPAO and just did some minor tweaks from there and it sounds great compared to my old Onkyo unit. Thanks for the tip on Standby. I assume that is not on low power mode?

I'm too am pretty happy with the overall sound with YPAO. Just out of curiosity, what tweaks did you do for your setup?

Based on what I read from the manual, standby mode actually still draws a little power. IMO I didn't like that idea, so I am just using a digital optical cable from TV to AV1.

IMO, they have an odd set of price points now -

677 650
A740 700
777 850
A840 900

Seems a confusing thing to do to customers. The HTR line was bad enough.

Seems logical if the 5th foot on the A series is worth $50.

The only changes I made were to bump up the center +2 and lower the rears -1 and then I was very happy. I have a wife and 2 kids so I also have the adaptive DRC turned on at night when I watch movies and that feature is very nice. With the older unit I had to either miss dialogue or turn on eng subs for all my films. I would rather not have subs if I can understand the spoken language.

That's funny

Isn't there a better warranty on the Aventage?

I believe the Aventage have an extra year.

All things considered, if I could go back, I may have bought the Aventage A740 over the RX-V677, but I can certainly say it looks like they are pretty much identical in terms of specs and features.

I just ordered an older 300 series (375?). I am going to do some tests on it to see what sort of SPL I can manage for movies without distortion.

I am doing this for the avsforum community, such that I can better know how to explain to people what sort of performance you get out of a 300 series. It will be unscientific as I lack the testing equipment needed for a scientific test. My ears are not 20 year old ears either. But I still think I can glean some good info on the performance.

I actually have two setups I can test it on, one in the living room, and one in the bedroom. Living room is dual Emo subs, and B&W 600 series speakers. 7.1 config, but I will have to temporarily switch it to 5.1 The bedroom I think is all Audio Concepts speakers including the sub. Bedroom is 2.1.

I am thinking of using Tron Legacy as my test Blu-ray as it's very dynamic with tons of bass. I will probably test it with the default YPAO setting, then I will change all speakers to small as it usually fails to do and test again. I will use an SPL meter, and the only ears that are convenient, my own.

I hope to have this done in the next few weeks.

Fry's mystery "brand name receiver" for this week's ad. is the RX-V577 if anyone's interested. This isn't the first time they had it at this price.

^ Are those the only choices? If so, I would definitely go with that Polk set.

If not, I would maybe consider the Klipsch Synergy series. Decent price right now. Here is the complete set sold by Stereo Advantage via Amazon. You can piece it together from Newegg for a similar price.

how's the RX-V377 compare to Denon AVRE200 , Harman Kardon HK 3390, or Onkyo TX-SR313? is the yamaha worth $299? I mainly compare about music. i'm currently using a integrated amp and i have a 2.1 setup. More about my situation here: Help me choose between receiver

I had Onkyo before and was looking at the 313 model but after hearing all of the HDMI issues they had I decided to go with Yamaha because of what I heard and also that it had YPAO. Most places sell the 377 for $249 FYI.

No idea about the other models.

Quick question on the 377. Does it simply pass through video with no processing? Is there a setting for this on this model? Thanks.

You can always adjust the crossover, but it only has an effect for speakers you have designated as Small (which is recommended for all speakers anyway).

It has nothing to do with 5.1, DACs, optical or HDMI — the crossover will always be applied to speakers set as Small.

thanks. So i can do 5.1 even if i connect my source to the receiver's RCA audio in, but it won't be true 5.1 right? I ask this because i may return to using my original dac (fiio e17) and i want to know my options.
