I am looking for a decent AVR 5.1 System. I recently purchased the Harman Kardon HKTS 16 5.1 and now need an AVR to pair it with. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I am looking in the $200 range (lower the better). I just need this to be comparable with the speakers, and if it could have some streaming features (android phone for music), that would be nice. I do realize that there is an add on dongle to stream, so maybe just the "best" from $200 or below. I watch movies, game, and watch sports quite a bit.

So far this one seems to be in that range. Any suggestions/opinions? Am I better buying now, or waiting for a sale on Amazon or some other retailer? It seems that every now and again these AVRs go on big sale.

Denon avr-e300 5.1

This is not scientific, but personally, I have had good luck with factory refurbs from both Yamaha (purchased from Accessories4Less) and Onkyo (purchased from ShopOnkyo). In the $200 price range, you can get a very nice refurb AVR from any of the big players. I would not buy a refurb without a minimum of a 6-month to 1-year warranty. Both of my refurbs came with 1 yr factory warranties.

The denon e300 was on sale a week ago at $200 which is a great deal. Also, I believe the yamaha v375 is on sale right now for $180 through amazon I think

Thanks!

Is there a time of year when prices for AVRs generally drop? Like TVs do around or after CES?

Placed an order for the HK, but its on back order until mid June. So I kept looking for a speaker system and i came across this, anyone know how this stacks up against the HK?

Not sure how it will stack up against the HK, but it'll be good for small to medium sized rooms. There's a Pinnacle Owner's thread here in the speaker section of AVS if you want to check it out. I know a few people had problems with Dell orders. It's worth checking out if you have the time.

I would buy this over both of those systems though:

I was considering the energy set when it was on Gold Box on Amazon a few weeks ago at $299, but it was just a little more than I wanted to spend knowing that I would have to drop about another 200+ on an AVR. Trying to keep the whole thing under $400 if possible. I know you get what you pay for, but gotta keep a budget.

$400 and under is going to be tough without buying junk. I'd wait for the Energy take classic set to go on sale for $250 and pick up a used receiver from Craigslist possibly. I'm not sure what your area is like, but it's worth checking out.

Can you settle for 2.1 or 3.1 for now until you're ready to expand to a full 5.1 system in the future? What's your viewing environment like...how big is the room?

The price is great, but how does this stack up to HK or Energy or any other brands? I use their wires, and for the most part I am happy with Monoprice, but not sure if I would use their speakers. Any experiences?

these forums are full of guys with super high end nice stuff. so take their opinions with a grain of salt. I had a pretty basic htib for years that was not earth shattering (not even a self powered woofer), but it provided a nice upgrade over the tv speakers. So it really depends on your goal. If you want top of the line sound, you don't always have to pay for it, but generally you do get what you pay for when you cut corners. All that being said the "low end" receivers get a bad name. They're still awesome compared to htib. a yamaha 375 is a great starter for under $300 and others make some nice, no thrills receivers. Just don't expect to get wifi and lots of extras (that you might not ever use anyhow). I think the important features in addition to sound are number of hdmi ports and other connections you might need. Almost all manufacturers have some sort of calibration system and other standard features. My vote is to spend more on speakers as they tend to last longer and look at your receiver as something you're going to upgrade due to the changes in tech.

Yea, I did more research and after shipping, there is not a huge savings in monoprice speakers vs the energy takes (when on sale), so I may wait for them to go on sale, especially considering the HK are back ordered until June.

And, yes, I do realize anything will be a quantum leap compared to my TV speakers at the moment.

Thanks!

I really wish I was looking for this deal when it was available:

http://slickdeals.net/f/6335622-martinlogan-mlt-2-5-1-ch-premium-home-theater-speaker-system-black-system-169-99-fs-newegg

$170 including shipping seems like a great deal for this.

There seems to be more wisdom in this area related to http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=109&cp_id=10906&cs_id=1090601&p_id=10565&seq=1&format=2

I would never get speakers whose midwoofer was 3" in diameter. Even 5.25" driver's are often strained at 80Hz or even 100Hz.

This could be something that I may pull the trigger on. Still worried about it being refurbished.
