Hello all,

So I recently got these speakers from a family member:
http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Acoustic-Research-PL100-5.1-Home-Theater-System/3344683/product.html

I know they're old but you can't beat free.

What I want to do is hook up my PS4 and Sony Bravia KDL40 to these.
I figured I need a receiver but I don't know much more than that.
Thanks in advance.

These are 4-ohm speakers and the majority of lower end (<$1000) receivers are not designed to power 4-ohm speakers at volume levels much above average TV listening levels. If you prefer louder movie listening levels you would be better served getting a set of 8-ohm speakers. Find out what the family member was using to power them and what volume levels they used. What is your receiver budget?

If they were high end 4 ohm speakers then yes buy a amplifier that can power 4ohm speakers? For a HTIB that cost £121? Not
worth it.

Some of my speakers are 4ohm...but not low end stuff

Krell Evolution 900e x 7

Bose Jewel speakers.

Jealous of my speakers?

Here's something that is in the same price range as the street price of the speakers and will work pretty well:

Thanks for the advice everybody. I honestly don't think these were used prior to my acquisition. I'm definitely not looking to spend a lot and the denon looks good for what I'm trying to do. The ohms were something that concerned me, from my experience with guitar gear I always heard mismatched ohms led to damaged gear. Would I damage the speakers or the receiver? I don't turn up too much but would it be so quiet that it's not worth bothering?

No, not at all. You should be fine at average TV listening levels. And the AVR will shut down in protection mode before it or the speakers are damaged.
