I just purchased an 850 receiver yesterday. I'm just becoming familiar with the features and functionality.
I'm opening this thread for future discussions about this family of receivers that some say are "a solid improvement on what was already strong lineup from last year". Here are some preliminary reviews:

Airplay isn't working for me - my iDevices don't see the Sony AVR. I'm on a wired connection to my router - is that the problem? Does the Sony need to be on WiFi only? It's on the same network either way, but... ?
After initial setup and a little tweaking, all I can say is wow!
I'm coming from an Onkyo 709. I run 2.2, 2 speakers- 2 subs. I just prefer it to 3.2 or 5.2 incase your wondering.
I have a Comcast x1 cable box, PS4, and a Sony 55w802a hooked up to it.
Two things I hated about the Onkyo that really annoyed me. The sound.
I tweaked, measured, and did everything I could to get good sound. It either sounded anemic or too over processed. I always assumed it was the source material.
Now everything sounds so clean and natural. The two subs integrate so well. Before they either disappeared or sounded bloated.
For TV it sounds fantastic. It sounds perfect with voices, music, and movies. The Onkyo always sounded shouty.
I don't have any extra settings under Audio, but commercials don't blare out at you. The wife loves it.
For music, I mostly use airplay and it works perfectly. I can just pick a song on the ipad and it automatically starts playing on the Sony, even if it's on another input. I do wish it would automatically go back to TV after I'm done.
I tried hooking up my Apple TV but the direct airplay from the ipad sounded better in my opinion. Spotify also sounded better directly than through the Apple TV.
So overall I am very happy. I feel like the receiver has gotten out of the way and I can just enjoy the listening experience.
I am happy with my Sony receiver but the FM tuner section is nasty. We had to modify the out door FM antenna down to one element and turn it away from local towers. This receiver overloads and has bad selectivity. Very poor FM section. Plus i must also drop the signal to this receiver 10db's lower. My Tivoli radio in the kitchen is on same antenna with full signal from a 2 way splitter and selectivity is great. Is this this receiver in need of service or did Sony not give a crap about the FM section?

I got the STR-DN1050 over the weekend. Hooked up my PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, and Sony BDP-S6200. All are working great. I have the Sony KDL-55W900a TV.
I previously had the Pioneer VSX-1121-K and had major problems because it didn't pass the correct RGB value through each source. The Wii U requires RGB Limited and it would force RGB full all the time.
The 1050 is passing every signal correctly.
I wasn't sure what do set the HDMI Audio delay setting to. I changed it to HDMI Auto (can't remember what the default was but it wasn't on Auto).
Smitty, I have all the EXACT same equipment as you minus the xbox one and the 1050. I've been looking at the 1040 for a while but never pulled the trigger. Glad to hear you are enjoying the 1050. I may grab one soon. Do you feel your input lag when passing the signal through the 1050 is still around 20ms? (Don't know if you play FPS's).

I'd guess the latter - who listens to FM on an AVR nowadays? Obviously you do, but I'd imagine that you're in a very small minority of owners who do. What about streaming your desired FM station(s), is that an option?

It "feels" fine to me...sadly I have no way to test the input lag on the PS4. I previously had my PS4 hooked up directly to the TV and it feels exactly the same, no noticeable lag. I do have the TV on Game mode, of course.
Can you tell me what they wanted for it price wise?
By tomorrow morning I need to decide if I'm going to return the STR-DN1040 I bought at Future Shop almost a month ago, and wait until I can get a deal on a STR-DN1050. Or just keep the STR-DN1040 and live with the small issues that bug me (no native FLAC Streaming, very limited source available to Zone 2 RCA outputs (no digital), etc.). These are small things but I know the STR-DN1050 can do them no problem. On the STR-DN1050 side I hear the remote is not as complete as the STR-DN1040 but some folks like it better as it's less complicated.
Having moved up to the 1050 from the 1040 I am happy with the choice. However I seem to have a problem managing the bass output. I am using the KLIPSCH QUINTET SL speaker system with A KLIPSCH SUB 12 subwoofer and using the engineer calibration the bass seems much louder than need be so I adjust it about 5db lower than the calibration sets it at. Is anyone else experiencing this?
I just saw the STR-DN1050 on Sale for $599.99 at NCIX (my favorite computer store) but it's on back order. I'm going to box up the STR-DN1040 now so it's ready to return in the morning. For the extra money, I'll be a bit happier with the simple networking.

I gave up on NCIX as they had no plans to deliver it 3 weeks after order. I saw it was on Sale for the same price ($599.00) at the Sony Style Store downtown, so I bought it there yesterday afternoon. (The last one.) I've gotten it mostly set up but haven't tested a lot of things (AM/FM Tuner, Zone 2, Up Scaling Component Video, etc.,).
I did find one disappointing thing that I didn't see with the STR-DN1040. The USB connection wimps out and won't play my portable Hard Drives. At least this one won't. It will play USB Sticks carrying MP3 & FLAC Files => so that's good. I've got all my tunes backed up on a couple drives and it was neat being able to just plug 'em in and go.
I did get the network set up and the firmware upgraded. But so far it's like the STR-DN1040 as I can't figure out how to play FLAC Files via the DLNA connection. That, and the Zone 2 capabilities of the STR-DN1050 were the reasons I returned the STR-DN1040 last month to go for the 1050.
The setup is marginally better than the STR-DN1040 as the remote , even though it's dumbed down, is far more intuitive than before. I'll report back on how this checks out. One thing nice is the return policy of the Sony Style Store is 30 days in case I need to move up again. I was thinking the new STR-DN1050 would be everything the STR-DN1040 was plus more. I wasn't prepared for anything less (like the lack of playing hard Drives via USB). I hope it's a glitch...

I have 2 subs out, but I did notice that with the engineer sound, which I don't like. I personally like the flat as it sounded more natural in my room, but raised bass +2 and treble +1.
But this is all subjective as everyone's room and speakers are different.
Just a side note. I use a crown amp and the Sony has no problems pushing it. Might be helpful info for those using pro amps for sub duty.
I thought I would miss the sub eq I had on my Onkyo, but the Sony sounds so good I don't miss it.

After playing with the settings some more it seems that leaving the front and center speakers set at the calibration size of large seems to get rid of the " boominess ".
I took the plunge and ordered the STR-DN1050 from NCIX. However, it's on back order with no known delivery date so far. I'll poke them to day and find out what's up.

Hi was wondering if it's somehow possible to watch from one source while listening to another. Eg I'd really like to stream music via bt or airplay while passing the cable video signal to the tv without sound. It would be fine to have the hdmi pass-through on while playing the music from a different source. Any tips would be appreciated.
The GUI stopped working! It worked fine last night, but today it doesn't work. Nothing appears on the screen! Did I change a setting somehow?
