Just picked up my ordered Pioneer VSX-80 receiver from a brick and mortar store. Will post pictures, review, and settings. Thought I'd start a thread for interest.

Where can you find Pioneer VSX-80 Elite AVR?

Where do you guys find this AVR? I'm looking all over internet, and found nothing. From Pioneer website, it's indicated that "Coming Soon". No date for release for purchase. How did you guys purchase it? Can you give me the store link or something?

I preordered it from a Magnolia. I thought release date was not until end of month but they called me a few weeks ago saying it had arrived.

So far I am very pleased with it. Fit and finish is good, features and sound as expected.

I called every BB Magnolia store in my market and none had it. In fact nobody even knew when it might be arriving.

So for South Florida I had no luck

When I asked if I could pre order they told me that they cannot do that so I am out of ideas.

Yeah I have been spamming refresh on the official site every day. As soon as I find a place to buy it from, I will snatch it up instantly.

Too bad Amazon does not get the Elite models

I'm going to be checking around South Florida this weekend for either the VSX-88 or 44.
Have you had any luck?

I was lucky enough to find the VSX-80 at a Best Buy MAgnolia in Boca Raton.

Any luck finding yours?

EDIT:

I have had issues assigning the optical in to an hdmi input on the receiver. I use optical from my home theater PC to my receiver for sound, so right now I am dead in the water until I find a solution.

I have selected "optical in" under the HDMI port settings but it does not seem to work

Found the 44 at a Magnolia near Sawgrass, also at Sound Advice.
Same price on both.

I am thinking about replacing my VSX-32 with this receiver maybe in the fourth quarter of this year. I know that the Sabre ES9006 Premier DAC isn't up to the standards of the 32-bit Sabre Ultra and Reference ES9018 DACs. However, don't other receivers with the Sabre Premier ES9006 DAC normally go for $1500-$2000? If so, that would be my primary reason for getting the VSX-80, along with its DSD-to-analog capability, as well as its PQLS bitstreaming of DSD, Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD Master Audio, and PCM.

Well you are correct. The optical only works with the TV input, but that input does not allow me to select an HDMI source.

For example, under the config menu it will allow me to select TV and optical -1 is selected (and it works) but under HDMI it is grayed out and set to none.

Hi oni222, turn off HDMI Control or ARC (Audio Return Channel).

I disabled HDMi control and ARC and the setting is still greyed out.

The settings looks like so:

INPUT : TV
Input Name: Rename
Input Skip = off
Audio in = OPT-1
HDMI Input = --- (Grayed out)
Component in = --- (Grayed out)
12V Trigger = Off

Sorry, maybe I misunderstood with you are trying to do.

HDMI source with optical audio? If so, I believe TV input can't be used. Select the HDMI input and then assign optical then use the Signal Sel in Audio Parameter to cycle over to Digital.

I am not sure on what you mean with "then use the Signal Sel in Audio Parameter to cycle over to Digital"

I compared the ES9006 DAC's written specs with beloved DACs from the past, and you'll like my findings. The ES9006 DAC 8-channel DAC has a dynamic range of 120dB, similar to the Cirrus Logic CS4398 stereo DACs possibly found in the Marantz DV7001 2006/2007 model universal DVD player, and 3dB short of the Burr-Brown PCM1796 stereo DACs, as found in the Denon DVD3930CI and Pioneer Elite DV-58AV universal DVD players. Remember those three DVD players? Well, now we can play our lossless, uncompressed, and DSD audio for music and movies with quality similar to those players, except movies will sound better than on those players due to Blu-rays with PCM, DTS HD Master Audio, and Dolby TrueHD. With support for Pioneer's PQLS bitstream via HDMI for jitter reduction, as well as a DAC capable of DSD-to-analog conversion, for $700 MSRP, how can you beat this! A receiver with a DAC with 120dB dynamic range used to cost at least $1500, more than likely, $2000 or more. With 4k support and possibly more HD video and audio decoding via firmware updates, for $700, how can you go wrong with this!

I followed your instructions but up until Audio P. The only issue is I cannot find a Signal Sel or anything that gives me a digital as an option.

I found an option called SIGSEL and the only options are Analog, HDMI and Auto.

Yes that's its, SIGSEL (Signal Select). But that is odd you don't have that option. Do you get any audio from optical when TV Input is selected?

The optical worked from my previous receiver, the Onkyo 608.

The current setup is my PC using optical out into the receiver.

EDIT: I have the HDMI connected to HDMI -1 but the video will not show up in the "TV" input. Audio will come through but no video, when I go over to other inputs I eventually find the Video and renamed the input HTPC.

The issue is that SIGSEL shows me the same options as before on that input.

When I go to the TV input I tried to manually changing the HDMI input to -1 but it is greyed out. So now I can either get Video or Audio but not both....

If the source is connected to HDMI-1 you should select either "HDMI-1" input or "DVD" input not "TV" input.
If Digital is not showing as an option in SIGSEL menu (for HDMI-1 input) then suggest to reset the receiver.

I believe my tv optical out is connected to HDMI3 TV input on the VSX-80. Works flawlessly no issue with ARC on and off.
