Polk sensitivities are good, not great, but better than a lot of others. They will play plenty loud with very little power.

Room size, listening habits; x overs, etc; will all play into whether you might see an improvement from external amplification.

Why do you think you might need one? Have you hooked them up and listened to them?

Do you hear distortion at your typical volume level?

IMO adding a higher power amp to a receiver used as a preamp is a good idea, especially if you like to listen at higher volumes, or have a large listening room. It also gives you more options if and when you decide to upgrade your speakers. You don't mention budget, but in another recent post I suggested the OP take a look/listen to the ATI line of amps. Just as an aside and to add my two cents, I'm running RTi12s as mains off an Onkyo 605 with zero problems (no fatiguing, no distortion at our comfort levels, no shrillness, etc.). The RTis/RTi As can pretty much be run with any AVR from my experience; it's when you get into the LSis that there are issues with higher power and better amplification needs due to their low impedances/quasi-low efficiency...
