Understanding beyond 5.1

In the new world of 7.1 to now 13.1 what is the Hierarchy of speaker choice (if there is such a thing)? Where is it used? DTS/DD or is it a matrixed /processed effect type of sound. And finally how is all of this impacted by the Atmos stuff coming out?

We won't really know how well the new Atmos stuff works until it comes out shortly. I can tell you that I went from 7.1 to 11.2 last summer, with a new Denon 4520, and new Martin Logan Motion series speakers. The improvement was awesome. Depending on the movie of course.

Did the second sub make a big difference? I am hesitant being that I have a giant SVS ultra 12. Do not see needing any more than that behemoth

A second sub is usually used not so much to increase the total sound level, but more often to even out the response across the listening area. The second subwoofer usually is used to fill in the nulls that are caused by reflections of low frequencies which have wavelengths that correspond to the dimensions of the room.

So I wouldn't have to match the SVS

It's usually best to have matching subs, if at all possible. That way you don't have to worry about automated EQ software over-stressing the less capable one when it tries to match its output to that of the other sub.
