AV8801 - worth a step up from PR-SC5508?

Hi,

I read a lot but don't post a lot here .

I own an Onkyo PR-SC5508 (equivalent of the integra 80.1?) and am interested in the AV8801 by Marantz.

I've had the main ribbon cables and HDMI issues sorted with the Onkyo however have limited confidence in it long term.

What I would like some feedback on is any real improvement in audio that I might experience - strictly for HT use.

I use the Audyssey on my Onkyo and would do so on the Marantz.

My amplifier is an Elektra Theatron (7 channel) driving MK Sound SS-150's and surrounds in a 5.2 setup (2 SV Sound subs).

I've read far too many reviews throwing out a slew of wankwords like 'lifting the veil' etc so was hoping for some straight up owner feedback about sound, function and quality. I use iRule.... so knowing if it can be controlled by that would also help .

I've never heard any difference between amplifiers that wasn't related to DSP or differing eq systems. I believe that people proclaiming tangible improvements in sound quality when switching receivers is largely placebo.

My advice to people is pick the AVR the has the reliability and feature set you want and don't really worry about anything else. Power largely doesn't matter unless one receiver has A LOT more power than the other. 100 watts vs 130 watts doesn't matter, that equals a gain of less than 1dB in spl.

I agree to a point. Iterative improvements in sound steering and staging can be made though as examples.

Definitely important to check out the overall functionality. I want dub EQ to manage 2 independent subs for example. Some processors treat them as one sub. If I add speakers for 7.2 then I'll want the DSP to accommodate that but I'm not hugely into the varied modes on offer with most systems now.

Those M&K speakers are 4 ohm and deserve dedicated amplifition, crappy AVR aren't up to the job. Anyway he's interested in av pre, not crappy AVR's, and generally sound bad driving 4 ohm speakers.

I'd ditch the Onkyo due to HDMI reliability.

Bose Jewel speakers.

Jealous of my speakers?

I had an Integra 80.1 then an 80.2. I now own the 8802. The hdmi board failed on the 80.2. I got it repaired and sold it. I can't say that there is an improvement in ht sound but IMO there is for 2 channel. Better overall clarity and sound staging. I'm sorry but Onkyo is not reliable enough for me to consider ever owning one again.

I run dual subs in my setup and am keen to go to 7.2 from 5.2 so the extra DSP modes and the Sub HT Audyssey are of interest as 'upgrades' from the Onkyo. I'm not expecting a ground breaking improvement in sound fidelity . Maybe a little warmer in the music which would be nice as my room is a little bright.

I'm quite happy with my amp too for now. It will drive 4ohm at reference all channels and produces nice clean sound .
