This thread will cover the three 2014 Denon models with Dolby Atmos and Audyssey MultEQ XT32 calibration. Dec 2014 Update: These models now have the option of a PAID upgrade to add the Auro featureset, which includes Auro2D and Auro3D decoding and the "Auro-matic" upmixer.

Please refer discussion of the non-Atmos 2014 S/X-Series models (i.e. AVR-X3100 and below) to the Official 2014 S/X Owner's Thread.

Official Press Release Announcement of AVR-X4100 and AVR-X5200

Denon AVR-X7200W EU/UK Product Sheet

Can someone explain this Dolby Atmos thing to me??

The three Dolby white papers linked below are essential reading for anyone who wants to understand this paradigm shift in home-theater audio, which literally takes movie sound into the third dimension. Everything you need to know is covered well in these three documents.

Dolby Atmos for the Home Theater
Dolby Atmos-Enabled Speaker Technology
Dolby Atmos Home Theater Installation Guide White Paper

Denon AVR-X4100W ($1,399 msrp)

The new AVR-X4100W is basically an X4000 with Atmos, HDMI 2.0, Bluetooth, WiFi, and an extra HDMI input. There are some other minor changes (noted below) but these are the key differences most will care about. In order to support the variety of potential speaker options, the pre-out count has been upped to 13.2 outputs (from 11.2 on the X4000), although note that a maximum of 9 channels can be active at a time regardless of how many external amps you add. The additional pre-outs are for flexibility if you want to have the option of switching between various speaker configurations (e.g. 7.1 + Wides for DTS Neo:X, and 7.1 + In-ceiling speakers for Dolby Atmos).

Denon AVR-X5200W ($1,999 msrp)

The X5200W is basically a Japan-made, souped up X4100W. It adds two more internal amps (9 total) rated at 140W/ch into 8 ohms (up from 125W/ch of the X4100), two more channels of processing capability (can run 11 simultaneously instead of 9 max), and fancier gold plated speaker connectors. Like the X4100W, the X5200W has a full set of 13.2 channel pre-outs, but since it can run 11 channels simultaneously, you can switch on the fly (example) from 11ch Neo:X and 7.1.4 Atmos, provided you have sufficient channels of external amplification to supplement the 9 internal amps. The X5200W also borrows from the higher end 4520CI (and its replacement X7200W) by incoporating a beefier "monolithic discrete amplifier" design with upgraded "Denon High Current Transistors" (DHCT), so it can be assumed it will be much more capabable of handling difficult speaker loads than the lower level models.

Denon AVR-X7200W ($TBD msrp)

The X7200W is the new "flagship" and true successor to the 4520CI, as opposed to the X5200 which is probably more of a logical successor to the older 3808CI level. The X7200W steps up the build quality with a physically larger chassis (a bit over 1 inch deeper and taller), is 8 lbs heavier than the X5200 (39lbs vs 31lbs), and upgrades to full 32-bit processing architecture (32-bit DAC's, D.D.S.C - HD32 processing, AL32 instead of AL24, etc). The "discrete monolithic" amplifier design of the 5200 by is upgraded by separating it into two left/right banks of discrete monolithic amplifier channels for better isolation. It also provides 7.1 EXT IN analog inputs, an extra component video input and a second component video output (output scan be configured for Main Zone or other zones). The X7200W, like its 4520CI and 4810CI predecessors, offers more flexibility with custom Amp Assign options (as opposed to the fixed templates on the lower models). And, unlike the lower level models, the X7200W will have the option of a paid hardware upgrade to the new HDCP2.2 chipset sometime in 2015.

What's else is new this year?

Leaving aside Atmos for a moment, the general differences between last year's models and are discussed more thoroughly in the first few posts of the Official 2014 S/X Owner's Thread.. The biggest (non Atmos) differences that most will care about vs. the outgoing X4000 and 4520CI:

* Upgrade to HDMI 2.0 with 3D, 4:4:4 and 4K/60fps pass through support (note that the HDMI ports are NOT certified for HDCP 2.2 however!)
* ISF Certification (allows different Day/Night video calibration settings per input)
* Bluetooth built in for wireless streaming
* Networking and WiFi built in, with support for DSD and hi-rez (192kHZ) FLAC and WAV files via network stream or USB
* Built-in Spotify interface replaced by "Spotify Connect" for all networked models (i.e. you can only control it from a separate device, not from the receiver directly)
* A new "TV Audio On/Off" setting to defeat the annoying auto switching caused by an HDMI-CEC ARC connection
* Heavily revamped smartphone/tablet remote apps coming in the fall with expanded functionality
* Return of Quick Select buttons on the remote (as opposed to just on the front panel)
* Return of the "Channel Level" on screen menu for on the fly adjustments to all channels (note that for the first time this setting is per input not per surround mode)
* Expanded "Option" menu for on-the-fly audio/video adjustments (the "Setup" menus will now be reserved for more global adjustments)
* HDMI and SPDIF digital audio to Zone 2, and SPDIF (no HDMI) digital audio to Zone 3 (the X4000 already had this but the 4520CI didn't).

Some cool new usability enhancements!

Improved Audyssey calibration inferface: The interface is slicker and easier to use, with better visual feedback. There are also some useful changes to the instructions provided, for example the system warns you to not measure close to the back wall, and after the 1st position it informs you to keep the other measurements within 2 feet of the 1st measurement, ensuring a tight "bubble" of measurements that will yield superior results. Also, there is no longer the confusing separation between the "Calculate" and "Store" steps (with many people forgetting to "Store"!). Now, when you complete Audyssey calibration, it proceeds through the calculation and saving of the filters as one step, with a nice progress bar showing what's happening. In addition, while it's calculating/saving, it lets you know you can unplug the mic, and then asks you if you want to turn on Dynamic EQ (default = yes) and Dynamic Volume (default = no) instead of making you wait until the end. Subtle stuff, but a really nice step forward!

Improved All Zone Stereo implementation: The popular "All Zone Stereo" feature which allows you to synchronize any audio source (including HDMI) across all zones continues, but there are a couple of cool enhancements. First, unlike the previous models, it is no longer a requirement to manually turn on the other zones first before engaging All Zone Stereo. When you start All Zone Stereo, the other zones turn on automatically. Second, it is no longer necessary to use ALL the zones. When you open the "Option" menu to access All Zone Stereo option, each of the other zones listed (Zone 2 and Zone 3) has a little checkbox next to. You can check/uncheck which zones you want to "participate" in the All Zone Stereo output, and then when you engage the modes only those zones checked will turn on and start playing.

A new Channel Level adjustment paradigm: Also accessible from the "Option" menu is a new Channel Level adjustment screen. Previous Denons have had on-the-fly Ch Level adjustment menus, but Denon has changed the way they work with the new 2014 lineup. There are two key changes for this year. First, the adjustment is RELATIVE to the baseline established in the Speaker setup menus. In other words, the "default" setting in this menu is always 0dB, and any changes will be plus or minus from the baseline level set in the Speaker menu. Second, the adjustment is stored PER INPUT. So, for example, you can set your Blu-ray input to be +3dB on the subwoofers and +2dB on the center channels, and it will only affect that input and make those adjustments relative to the balanced levels set during auto setup. If you want to make a GLOBAL change to a speaker channel level, you need to go into the GUI and access the Ch Level test tones via Speakers > Manual Setup > Levels.

Welcome to the Official 2014 Denon Atmos models (X4100W, X5200W, X7200W) thread.

If this is your first visit to this thread, and you want to ask a question about one of the 2014 Denon Atmos models, either one that you own or one that you are thinking of buying, please provide the following information to allow for better responses to your questions:

(a) Identify the model number in question (eg. X4100W), as there are 3 different models discussed in this thread. Also if you have not posted in several days since your initial post, please post the model # again so we don't have to back track to learn which model you are referencing.

(b) Identify what you've done so far to troubleshoot the issue and what the front panel is displaying if an audio issue, (also take a few minutes to review the Troubleshooting section provided at the bottom of this post to see if your question is answered there),

(c) Unless you indicate what settings have been changed, the assumption will be that all settings are on the factory defaults (ie. usually "Auto"),

(d) If the advice given seems to simplistic or obvious, don't shoot the advice giver as we have no idea of the level of your technical understanding,

(e) If there is no response to your post, it either means no one knows the answer or it has simply been overlooked so repost if you still haven't resolved your issue,

(f) If you post a question in this thread and are given advice and either it or some other advice (eg. Denon phone support, Denon "Ask a Question" email support) resolves your issue, have the common courtesy to post back what solution resolved your issue so others can learn from it as well,

(g) If the issue is not user error or not just a misunderstanding on how the AVR works, please call Denon support so the issue is registered,

(h) When responding to another post that is providing assistance to you, please press the "Quote" button in the lower right corner of that other poster's response so that response is also listed with your new post, and,

(i) If you don't live in either the USA or Canada, please either indicate your country location in your profile or your post as some Denon models from other regions in the world differ in configuration from their USA/Canada counterparts otherwise responses made will be regarding the USA/Canada models.

Known Issues relating to the 2014 Denon X4100W/X5200W/X7200W models

This post will be used to list any known issues being discussed in this thread or identified by Denon as well as their resolution (if any). If you are experiencing any issues, ensure the unit has the latest firmware update installed. The first troubleshooting step would be a "soft reset" which is just setting the unit to Standby and unplugging it for 10 or more minutes which will not cause any settings to be lost.

1. Audio mutes on commercials: The audio mutes when shifting from surround mode Dolby Digital (DD 5.1 audio) to surround mode DD + Dolby Surround (2.0 audio). So for example, DD 5.1 TV show going to a DD 2.0 TV commercial will produce this issue. The work around is to simply use the Dolby Digital + Dolby Surround for both 2CH and 5CH audio.

2. Test tone SPL: Not an issue, but if you want to check the SPL levels using the Test Tone setting in Manual Setup, you must first raise the Master Volume up to 80/0db (ie. reference volume). This will then only approximate the actual SPL that will be used with Audyssey enabled as the test tones do not take into account the Audyssey filters applied. Rest assured that in virtually every case the SPL set by the AVR for each speaker/sub when using the Audyssey mic and a mic boom stand, camera tripod, or the included rocketship stand to support the mic, will be accurate. Note that any changes you do make using the Test Tone setting will be globally applied to ALL sources. To change the volume of a particular speaker for a specific source, simply select OPTION - CHANNEL LEVEL ADJUST on the remote and you can then adjust the volume +/-12db from the global volume set in Manual Setup - Test Tones.

3. SAVE/LOAD not working: Using IE to perform a SAVE of the config.dat file may or may not work, however using another browser will generally work every time. Enter the following URL into your desktop/laptop web browser, replacing the 192.168.0.XXX with you own unit's IP address.

SAVE - 192.168.0.XXX/SETUP/OTHERS/SAVE/f_config_save.asp

LOAD - 192.168.0.XXX/SETUP/OTHERS/LOAD/f_config_load.asp

Note: I have never personally been able to get the SAVE/LOAD procedure to work using IE, however, have always been successful using Google Chrome.

A. Using Internet Explorer
Note that if you are using Internet Explorer 10 (or other browser) and do not immediately see the SAVE/LOAD setting below the General button (as noted in the image below), after selecting the Setup Menu from the top menu, per forum members Ace Deprave/Sean Spamilton, try either selecting the Compatibility View icon (broken square) in the URL address bar on your laptop or go to Tools - Compatibility View Settings and add the AVR's IP address and you should see the SAVE/LOAD ...

B. Using Google Chrome
To use Google Chrome, follow the instructions listed in this post ----> Post #2775.

C. Using Firefox or Safari
Forum member enricoclaudio reported that you can use either Firefox or Safari by entering the following URL into either browser window....http://192.168.0.236/SETUP/OTHERS/f_others.asp replacing the "192.168.0.236" in the IP address with your own AVR's IP address.

----------------------

Regardless of which browser you use, although the AVR may successfully load the config.dat file to your PC, it may not power back on afterwards as is noted on the SAVE page displayed on your PC.

For more general helpful information, refer to the SAVE/LOAD info listed in the following link ....

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/90-r...x-series-avr-model-owner-s-thread-faq.html#e9

4. Remote control programming: When programming the Denon remote to control your TV, use the "TV Audio" button.

5. Incorrect configuration on X5200W by Setup Wizard when FL/FR pre-outs used: After running the Setup Wizard for 11.1CH, it will incorrectly set the AMP ASSIGN "Pre-Out" setting to "Front Wide", so before running Audyssey, you'll need to change the setting to "Front & Front Wide," otherwise, if you've already run Audyssey, when you change the setting, the AVR will require you to run Audyssey again.

Amp Assign = 11.1ch (ie. 7.1.4)
Height Speakers = 4 Height Speakers
Wide/Height2 = Top Rear
Pre-out = Front & Front Wide

6. Flickr does not work: Denon released a firmware update to resolve this issue; however, as of 2015 is no longer supported.

7. Network GUI does not display: This will require exchange/repair of the unit (if still within exchange period) or you can try the below procedure which worked for forum member GoodMan:

Starting with the unit already powered up and (any) NETWORK source selected;
a. Verify from the unit's front panel display that the source is indeed the network,
and the monitor device (TV) is not showing the network GUI.
b. Imagine a line at the back panel just above where the hdmi connectors are that extends across the unit from left to right side.
c. Repeatly exert some moderate finger pressure on the unit's back panel along the imaginary line while watching the output video device until the network GUI displays.

If still no joy, try loosening the screws at the back that attaches the cover to the back panel to give it more "give", then repeat the above process.

8. Subwoofer Level Adjust (SLA): This setting should be linked to the Manual Setup - Test Tones (Subwoofer); however, is not linked, such that if your sub is set to -6db in Manual Setup and you set the SLA setting to ON (without modifying the factory default setting of 0db), the sub volume level will be increased to 0db, so in other words, in this instance doing so would increase the volume by +6db (-6db --> 0db).

9. Trigger Out does not function properly: After installing the Auro 3D firmware upgrade, when either the Auro 3D or Auro 2D surround modes are selected while in another surround mode, the Trigger Out will turn the controlled device (eg. external amp) OFF and if selected when the AVR is powered to Standby, will not trigger on the controlled device. Denon has identified the issue with a firmware update expected early 2015. Forum member multit has a work around: External amp --> 12v trigger --> 12v trigger adapter --> smart power switch (slave); AVR --> smart power switch (master).

10. Audio dropouts with Verizon Fios: This issue can occur when receiving a Verizon FIOS signal, whether using a FIOS box or a TiVo. Denon is working with Verizon to resolve the issue. The work around is connecting the DVR via HDMI to the TV and optical from the DVR to the AVR.

11. Audio lip sync issues: If the audio is ahead of the video, try using the Setup - Audio - Audio Delay (0ms-200ms). If the video is ahead of the audio, try setting Setup - Video - HDMI Video - Auto Lip Sync to OFF. If still no joy, try setting Setup - HDMI Video - Video Conversion to OFF, noting that in doing so you will lose the Master Volume display on the TV as well as the GUI will no longer overlay on the source video, but rather on a black screen.

12. Bluetooth not pairing issue: Try doing the following steps:

- Setup - Network - Settings
- Set DHCP to OFF, and then power off the AVR for 30 seconds.
- Power AVR back ON and select Setup - Network - Settings
- Set DHCP to ON
- Power the AVR off again for 30 seconds.
- Power the AVR on and select Bluetooth source.

13. INFO - Signal = (gibberish): This issue occurs when streaming Dolby Digital Plus (+) audio (eg. Netflix, Amazon, Roku) and has apparently been introduced with one of the recent firmware updates but hopefully will be resolved with a forthcoming firmware update.

14. AVR will not connect to the router: The network card used in the 2014 models supports up to 802.11b/g (2.4GHz) so if you are using a 802.11n router, you may need to set it to "Mixed", "Legacy", or "g+n" mode if it doesn't default to one of these modes.

15. Apple TV will not pass video: Try resetting the Apple TV by holding down "Menu" and "Down" on the Apple TV remote for six seconds, and then release when you see the indicator light on the Apple TV blink rapidly.

16. ASUS Router connection issues: Review the following link provided by member Rew452 and consider installing this ASUS custom firmware: http://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca/about

17. Video related issues when streaming DD 5.1 from Roku 2: Video related issues can be resolved by purchasing the newer 2015 Roku 2.

18. Volume drops when going from 2CH audio (eg. commercial) using "Dolby Surround" mode to 5CH audio (HD program) using "DD + Dolby Surround" - A few owners (using either FIOS or DirecTV) have posted this issue. Current work around is to slightly adjust master volume level to bring volume level back to original level prior to going to the commercial. Denon is aware of the issue.

19. SiriusXM no longer supported: After March 31, 2020 SiriusXM will no longer be available via the on board menu selection.

Has anyone gotten any updates as to when the volume muting issue with Dolby Digital and Dolby Surround would be fixed?
Are there any CSR's on the boards here or would I need to contact one through Denons site?
i don't have an answer to your question; however, i think i'm experiencing the same behavior on my 4100. for me, when audio switches to Dolby D+DDS from Dolby Digital, the sound is partially muted and barely audible. i can correct the issue by hitting the Mute key or changing the volume level (which is quite annoying). @MayhemNJ and @sikclown - is this behavior similar to what you've experienced? thanks.
@jdsmoothie, can we get this issue (which I too am having) added to post #3 "Known Issues relating to the 2014 Denon X4100W/X5200W/X7200W models"?

How do I reset the microprocessor or do a network reset on my 2014 Denon X4100W/X5200W/X7200W

When the AVR is acting up or doing something strange, the first thing to try is a "soft reset" (ie. set the AVR to Standby and unplug the power cord for about 10 minutes, then plug back in the power cord and turn ON). If this doesn't resolve the issue, then you'll need to reset the microprocessor. You'll also want to reset the microprocessor before doing anything else if you purchased the AVR as an "open box" or demo/used/refurb unit to ensure all settings are returned to their original factory defaults. The "X" models feature the Web Control (SAVE/LOAD) that allows the config file (including the Audyssey setup) to be saved to a PC that can then be loaded after the reset to restore all previous settings (as all settings will be wiped out and require you to run Audyssey Setup again otherwise).

Microprocessor Reset

X4100W - p. 273
X5200W - p. 287
X7200W - p. 321

1 - Turn off the power using ON/STANDBY.
2 - Press ON/STANDBY while simultaneously pressing the "INFO" and "BACK" buttons (under front panel flap).
3 - Remove your fingers when "Initialized" appears on the front panel display.

** NOTES:
(1) Prior to resetting the microprocessor for the "X" models, you can SAVE the config/settings (to include Audyssey settings) to a PC file using the Web Control feature listed on the pages below. This process will take about 15 minutes to complete.

X4100W - p. 151
X5200W - p. 159
X7200W - p. 170

(2) If the SAVE procedure is not completing successfully using either Internet Explorer (PC) or Safari (Mac), try using Firefox instead.

NETWORK chip only reboot (no loss of settings)

Although not listed in the Owner's manual, a "Network chip only reboot" can be done using the below listed procedure which will only reset the network card with no loss of settings.

1 - With the AVR powered ON, select "Online Music" as the input source.
2 - Simultaneously press/hold the "DIMMER+SETUP" buttons on the front panel
3 - Hold the buttons for a few seconds until the display reads "Network Restart" and then release the buttons.

NETWORK RESET + Microprocessor Reset

Although not listed in the Owner's manual, a "Network reset" can be done using the below listed procedure which will not only reset the network card but will also do a microprocessor reset in the process and return all settings to their factory defaults.

1 - Turn off the power using ON/STANDBY.
2 - Simultaneously press/hold the UP/DOWN arrow buttons on the front panel and then press the ON/STANDBY button on the front panel.
3 - Once the display starts flashing at intervals of about 1 second, release the two buttons (hold for at least 4-5 seconds).

** If in step 3 the display does not flash at intervals of about 1 second, start over from step 1.

Firmware Update Information for the 2014 Denon X4100W/X5200W/X7200W models

(1) Firmware updates for these network models can be installed by the owner via an internet connection to the Denon servers. Although it's not necessary to update your unit if you are not experiencing any problems, it's generally a good idea to keep it updated so that if there are any problems with the update the unit will still be covered under warranty. The update process generally doesn't take more than 30 minutes once the download begins and also generally does not erase any settings, although it's always a good idea to SAVE the settings config.dat file using the Web Control feature prior to doing the update just in case. Note that if the update process is stuck on "Authenticating", ensure a source other than NET/USB is selected and just let it continue for up to a few hours and it should eventually begin the update process (although note that Denon's servers have been known to crash the first day of release due to the overload, so you may want to wait a few days before trying again). Some have noted that rather than selecting the "Check for Update", instead simply selecting the "Start Update" will avoid the "Authenticating" issue. One XX12 owner found that disconnecting ALL sources to the AVR enabled the unit to connect to the Denon servers and update the firmware when the update process had previously been unsuccessful for almost a year. Other tips if having problems with the update include setting "Network Standby/IP Control/Network" to OFF, cycling the DHCP setting on the AVR, or using a static IP address.

During the update, the AVR will go into Standby mode, but will continue to update status on the front panel display. If the update seems to be hung up (ie. goes beyond 1 hour) ... power the AVR to Standby, unplug it for a few minutes and power back on and attempt the update again. If the update fails to load, check the network environment (ie. reset the router, replace the router with a more current/robust model, or ideally wire directly to the router if connecting wirelessly) If still not having any luck with the update, perform a Network Reset as shown in post #4 above. You may also want to consider purchasing a long (100'+) Cat5/6 cable for network updates only for a higher probability of a successful install. Also note, that once the update has completed, there is no way of returning to an earlier version of firmware.

Networking model owners will be notified automatically when there is a firmware update when the AVR is turned ON as long as the Notification Update setting is set to ON (factory default). For more information refer to General - Firmware - Notifications -Update in your respective Owner's manual. To manually check for an update, refer to General - Firmware - Update - Check for Update in your manual.

(2) USB firmware update: If you have been unsuccessful with your attempt to install a firmware update via the network, you can download the latest update to a USB thumb drive from Denon's website.

(3) Denon will sometimes make "minor" changes to the firmware with each new manufacturing production run, so it's not unusual to see a higher firmware version number on a newer unit of the same model. For the non-networking models, this doesn't mean an older unit needs to be returned to get the firmware updated, rather it only needs to be updated (if a firmware update is available) if you are experiencing a problem that resetting the microprocessor will not resolve. The year/month the unit was mfr'd can be determined by looking at the first 3 digits of the serial number (eg. 408xxxxxxxx would be August 2014) which can be found on the original box as well as on the back panel of the AVR.

(4) What is my unit's current firmware version? The current firmware version on the can be determined from the AVR's menu: Setup --> General --> Information --> Firmware Version.

(5) There are two firmware notification settings, both of which default to "ON" from the factory..... "Update" (fixes) and "Upgrade" (new feature). When either an "update" or "upgrade" is available the networking models will display a message alerting you to this "update" or "upgrade" every time you turn on the AVR. If you prefer not to install the update/upgrade, then simply change the appropriate setting at General --> Firmware --> Notifications ---> Update/Upgrade to OFF (factory default is ON) and it will go away.

This area will be used to track the change log of the firmware updates:

HDCP 2.2 Hardware upgrade for original X7200W
As of May 1, 2015 United Radio (D&M factory repair center) has officially started the HDCP 2.2 "free" upgrade process on existing USA and Canada Denon X7200W AVRs (ie. not the X7200WA which already includes the HDCP 2.2 upgrade from the factory). The following links provide detailed information on where to ship the unit and about the process itself. As a reminder, United Radio is scheduled to take only 2 days to do the upgrade once the unit is received into their warehouse.

http://denon.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3799/related/1

http://denon.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3797/~/hdcp-2.2-upgrade-for-avr-x7200w

This will upgrade all rear HDMI inputs to HDCP 2.2 (front HDMI input to remain HDCP 2.0 as not on the board being replaced) and will also allow for a firmware upgrade in the future to HDMI 2.0a (HDR - High Dynamic Range content).

Auro 3D/2D + Auro-Matic (simulates audio to height speakers from non-Auro BD/DVD) Upgrade instructions (below instructions are for USA models only)

1. Connect the unit to the internet.
2. Ensure the unit has the latest firmware update installed.
3. Using the GUI, select Upgrade now or go to GENERAL -- FIRMWARE -- ADD NEW FEATURE and write down the "Upgrade ID" listed on the display
4. Go to the Upgrade website at http://upgrade.denon.com/na/denon/pages/home.aspx
5. Complete the Auro 3D upgrade Personal form to include personal information, the unit's serial number (listed on back of unit or on original box), and the Upgrade ID obtained in step 3.
6. Enter credit card information - cost is $199 USD which will also include the Auro 3D Demo disk.
7. Once the card has been processed, the Auro 3D upgrade will be available to download to the unit (estimated download time - 49 minutes)

Notes:
(1) For those owners not wanting to upgrade to Auro 3D at this time, you will be given the option to set Upgrade Notification to OFF on initial setup or you can go to SETUP -- GENERAL -- FIRMWARE -- NOTIFICATIONS -- UPGRADE and select OFF so you don't get the Upgrade notification each time the unit is powered ON.

(2) A number of 2014 Atmos model owners with the Auro 3D upgrade have noted they prefer the Dolby Surround upmixer (DSU) for movies and Auro-Matic for music.

(3) Additional information on Auro 3D/2D can be found in the Official Auro 3D thread.

Note that they often quote power specs as the 6ohm rating (or perhaps a peak "dynamic" rating) in order to sound better for marketing copy. The actual specs (apples to apples with how it's traditionally reported, i.e. 8ohm load) are 125W/ch for the X4100 and 140W/ch for the X5200.

Hi, Batpig, very long time, no see! (I haven't been lurking around much in Denon Receiver-land in awhile).

I just assumed EH was referencing continuous power ratings @ 8 ohms (albeit not with all channels driven simultaneously)--they are (well, nominally) a tech mag with mainstream coverage of audio/video/HT gear, after all. Went to Denon's U.S. site to see, from the link EH provided, but the new models weren't listed there, yet. Thanks for the G.B. link.

Piss poor reporting all around--but pretty typical of EH.

Anyway, I guess specs are better reported/marketed than in the '70s, before the FTC stepped in to somewhat ensure the wild-assed claims then current (weak pun intended) would cease--claims of dynamic peak power, with no impedance or distortion tolerances, were the norm for amplifiers. Apples to watermelons trying to compare them.

Anyway, 205W X 9 RMS from 110V is ludicrous, anyway, with or without tolerances..

I didn't know that the MSRP for the X7200W had been confirmed yet. I was expecting something closer to the 4520's MSRP of $2500 and in line with the reported European price of 2800 euros (seems like the USA pricing is usually 1:1 with the European pricing).

So, is $2999 confirmed for the X7200W?

#11 ·
Actually, AFAIK it's not confirmed. I must have pulled that out of my ass somewhere based on something I read or heard at some point. Not saying it's not true -- I think it is -- but it's not set in stone. I'll remove that reference for now...

Batpig, one more thing. I've been reading through the X5200W manual and I'm not sure how I'd configure it for my layout (standard 7.1 plus front heights and top middles). The Dolby Atmos configuration wouldn't work because it assumes the four height speakers are top fronts and top rears.

The only other option that looks like it work would be to use the 11.1ch configuration, select Front Height/Top Middle as my Height 1/Height 2 configuration, leave the Wide/Height2 speaker output configuration as Front Wide (and just not connect speakers), then set the Height2 pre-out to Top Middle. I could connect nine of my speakers to the receiver' speaker terminals, the Top Middle speakers to an external amp, and when Audyssey runs the receiver will realize I don't have wides so it should ignore the speaker terminal that aren't connected.

Thoughts? Am I missing something obvious?

Will these units be able to route a digital audio signal to the zone 2 analog pre-outs? (Primarily interested in the X4100W.)

When using 'Front B' mode to allow for use of a second set of front speakers, does switching to the 'B' speakers merely swap out the fronts while keeping the center/rears active? Or does it disable the center/rears, effectively leaving the unit in 2.0/2.1 mode with only the 'B' front speakers active? If the former, can the levels or crossovers of the front 'B' speakers be adjusted separately from the main ('A') fronts?

Some of these may be unknown yet, but I suspect that it'll behave similarly to the 2013 series. So any feedback from owners of those units would be helpful. Thanks!

(Update: Looks like some of this is answered in jdsmoothie's 2013 Denon FAQ, as least for the 2013 models. The one thing that doesn't seem to be addressed there is the question of level/crossover settings for the 'B' speakers...)

#18 ·
My understanding is that the X4100/X5200 are the same as the X4000 with respect to zones. Three zones, with the HDMI output tied to Zone 2. Zone 2 can also play digital audio (2.0 PCM signals only) from either optical/coax SPDIF or HDMI inputs. Zone 3 can play 2.0 PCM from optical/coax only (no HDMI). I verified this by checking the UK version of the X5200 manual which is already available for download (see pg 155 if you download it).

And there are dedicated "2Ch Playback" settings for customizing stereo settings for bass management, level, and distance for a separate 2ch dedicated speaker rig.

I am holding out for the x7200 as a possible upgrade for my old Onkyo TX-NR905. I am currently running a 7.2 channel Axiom speaker system, and plan to pick up an extra pair of Axiom's QS8 "quad-polar" speakers for Atmos. My problem is that I really don't want to tear apart my ceiling and attempt to run an extra pair of cables through the heavily insulated walls & ceiling cavities.

I know it will be less than optimal, but does anyone have any thoughts on mounting a pair of QS8s at near ceiling height, inside of, and slightly in front of my main right/left floor-standing M60s? The QS8s do a great job of dispersing the audio - perhaps a pair of direct radiating speakers would suffice?

Thoughts or is it too soon to tell?

Regards,
Spence

Looks like the InstaPrevue may be only on the AVR-X7200W as the AVR-X5200W manual doesn't mention this feature. Also I hope this Free Amp Assign & Pre-Amp Assign from the AVR-4520 make there way to the X7200W as it seems the AVR-X5200W also doesn't have these features either.

Atmos in a 5.1 setup

I've been considering upgrading and have been looking at the x4100. My living room doubles as a home theater and I don't see going beyond a 5.1 setup - WAF. My question, does Atmos offer any benefits if you stick with 5.1? Or would the x4000 make more sense.

You need at least one pair of height or overheards for Atmos to kick in; otherwise you'll be listening to the same 5.1 track that you'd get on any AVR that can decode the 5.1 codecs.

But even a minimal 5.1.2 setup is great; in your position I'd take a look at the Atmos-enabled speakers to add height, either 5.1.2 or 5.1.4. That's what I'll be doing at some point - I live in an apartment so I can't install ceiling speakers, but I have a nice low, flat ceiling, so the Atmos-enabled speakers will be perfect.

#31 ·
No, no benefits from Atmos with a basic 5.1 or 7.1 setup. In order for Atmos processing to work you need some sort of "elevated" speakers, either in ceiling, front/rear heights, or upward firing "Dolby enabled" speakers. Note that if you not want to install in ceiling speakers due to WAF the upward firing Atmos speakers allow you to add two or four "top" channels with no additional footprint than a standard 5.1 setup. But you would have to buy new speakers or at minimum separate modules that will sit on top of your existing speakers.

Otherwise, yes, the X4000 at close out pricing is the better value. Same XT32 calibration and pretty much the same in most other respects besides the lack of wifi and Bluetooth. And you still have a variety of options to expand to 7 or 9 channels if needed.

Any educated guesses on what the 7200 will have over the 5200 model??

#37 · (Edited)
Hey Batpig and Jdsmoothie,

Its been close to four years since I have read and posted in the Denon thread - good to see both of you are still enlightening us with your knowledge. When I bought my then new 2809CI you guys were fantastic with answers and additional information to any questions I had.

Even though I'm still pleased with the 2809, time marches on and I believe it's time to upgrade. I just bought a new Samsung H7150 LED TV, and use a Panasonic BDT500 Blu-ray player so now it's Denon's turn.

My priority is music so I am wondering based on what is currently known about the 2014 models what I should be looking at buying. Would the X4100 give me a noticeable improvement in music? What does it have that my 2809 doesn't that makes music sound better? The "Monolithic Discrete Amplifier" and "Upgraded Transistors" sound interesting on the X5200, but I just don't know if they would be worth the $600.00 difference over the X4200. Would they really make that much of a difference in music? Finally, is it true the X4100 is not made in Japan, if not, where is it made, China, Malaysia?

I know both models have not been released yet, so it is all speculation but most of the upgrades in music and sound quality in general over my 2809 have been around in previous higher-end models so their impact on music would be known I would think.

Thanks again for all your help.

#38 · (Edited)
First the 2809 doesn't even support HDMI video overlay, so using it with a somewhat modern setup really shows. The most important aspects of a receiver upgrade over the 2809 would be a stronger amp, better DSP room correction especially with Audyssey MultiEQ XT32, and finally stepping out of the stone age of RS232 updates and having network access so you can receive FW updates, and various audio streaming services. See this pdf chart of 2015 Denon AVR's.

The 150 w/ch AVR-4520CI which is still on sale today is still a best buy compared to the replacement AVR-X7200W. The $2000 140 w/ch AVR-X5200W is a bit stronger amp then the 125 w/ch X4000 (replaced with x4200w) which is another good buy. You need to decide whether you want the new lineup versus the 2013 models. (HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 and Dolby Atmos are the main 2015 updates, other then wireless connectivity) The X4000 (replaced with x4200w) is made in China, while the X5200W and x7200W along with 4520 are made in Japan. :)

Hi JohnAV,

Good to hear from you again too. Thanks for the pdf, it is really helpful. I went to Denon's website but could find very little about the new 2014/15 models. Was hoping for a feature comparison chart like they had many years ago but I can't find it anymore. The pdf solved that problem, though.

Yes, having a HDMI video overlay will be a fantastic and long overdue feature for me! I guess, what I'm asking is will I notice no, a little, or a great improvement in music played from a CD or thumb-drive with Lossless WAV files if I were to do a A/B test between my 2809 and the X4100 or X5200 if all else is equal? If there is a very noticeable improvement what features are causing it? For example I don't know what music improvements would be attributed to the "Monolithic Discrete Amplifier" and "Upgraded Transistors" in the X5200 but it sounds cool :). If I remember correctly, at the X4100/X5200 level the AMP section is supposed to be isolated to improve the sound where the 2809 AMP section isn't, is this correct, and if so, does it really make a noticeable difference?

As I said previously, I know both models have not been released yet, so it is all speculation but most of the upgrades in music and sound quality in general over my 2809 have been around in previous higher-end models so their impact on music would be known I would think.

Thanks

Addendum: My only reason for upgrading is the HDMI video overlay, and improved sound/music quality. Things like having a gazillion speakers, sound coming from the ceiling, and using the Denon to pipe music to the patio, garage or wherever is of no interest to me :). I only use 5.1 for movies and 2 speakers for music and am perfectly happy.

I only use 5.1 for movies and 2 for music and am perfectly happy.
You would get you the most bang for the buck, would be the the improved sound/music quality from using Audyssey MultiEQ XT32 which the x4000 on up would offer. Batpig is very happy with his x4000 it seems. The x4100W would be a decent upgrade for you if you care to wait, going to the better models will offer incremental audio quality improvements with slightly more dynamic range. For me I upgraded all my speakers to Paragon Reference, and encountering some disney/sony lossless audio track decoding issues (dropouts/pops) finally pushed me to replace mine to a 4520. One heck of a difference in sound/music quality. Based on your setup, what would be acceptable to use is your decision. :)
