Advise & Help needed...

Hello all,

I am new here. Don't know if this is the right place to ask for help and advise...

I need to replace my Classe SSP25, it's been more than 10 years old and it finally stopped working.
I was wondering if I can replace it with Denon AVR-X4000 or Pioneer SC 2023 or something else?
I don't want to spend more as the whole system is quite old.

This is what I got for home cineam;
Martin Logan SL3, Martin Logan Script, Martin Logan Cinema, Rel Storm lll
Classe SSP25, Calsse CAV150.

I have very little knowledge about this whole thing, bought it from someone specialized with home cinema system years ago, and he is out of business now.

Thank you all for your time!

Jim

Welcome, Jim; I'll leave to others, with experience with those model(s), to advise

You will need more that that Denon can drive. I had the X4000 in my system with 6ohm speakers and it shuts down at reference level. Your speakers are rated at 4ohms which are more challenging. If you want to stay with Denon, I would recommend the 4520 as it is very powerful and has been greatly reduced as of late since it is being replaced. Also I would recommend the Yamaha 3030 as it has been tested with similar speakers as yours. Either way talk to the guys here JD or Craig as they usually have great deals and are very informative.

Thank you audio.hobby,

As I mentioned that I have very little knowledge about this whole thing, I only hear people talking about those two models, and I have no idea which one should work for the system I have.
And so, I joined the forum to seek advise and help, since the man whom I bought the system he went out of business.

I don't care what brand of AV receiver I should buy, I just want the system to work again, as now there is no sound from those speakers at all.

Speaking about the speakers, is there any ways that I can test to see if they are all fine?

Can I combine either Pioneer or Denon or Yamaha AV receiver to work together with Classe CAV 150? As the Classe power amp is not broken.

As long as the AVR has pre-outs, Jim, this will not only work, but is a good idea.

The Denon 4520, for instance, will expand to 11.2, with the additional of at least a 2 channel amp.

Since all the internal amps rely on the same power supply, this also takes the strain off those still used, if any.

Have you considered getting the Classe SSP25 repaired? Maybe just the PSU died.

Krell Evolution 900e x 7

Bose Jewel speakers.

Jealous of my speakers?

For instance, if I understand the specs for that amp, you could use it to power Left, Right, Center & Surround (2); then use the 4520 to power 2 each: Height, Wide & Surround Back.

I do NOT know your speakers, but seems they are power hungry, so using the amp may allow you to use a less powerful AVR, such as the X4000, or another, as long as it has pre-outs.

X4000 will do up to 9.2, with external amp.

How many channels do you want to run?

I was getting a bit depressed since I didn't get proper advise, and so spent last two days reading the forum... not good for my old heart.

Now I am delighted to see some proper advise. Thank you!

I was going to start another thread about choosing between Yamaha 3030, Pioneer LX87, or the Denon 4520.

However, the best way is not to spend too much as I mentioned that my system is quite old. And I think repair the SSP25 will go through troubles, as I live in Europe and there are not many dealers like to repair stuff but like to sell stuff.

@SP, thanks again! Basically the Denon 4000 should work as it has got Preamp out. How about the Pioneer sc2023? Also, is Audyssey MultEQ XT32 really matters?

@SP, I have 5.1 system and no intention to add more speakers, it's just to play some music and for kids to watch films.

I'm not familiar with Pioneer, but IF it has pre-outs, it should work.

I like Audyssey, but don't have experience with 32, which is supposed to be much better than what I have; SUB EQ, from what I understand, is the real difference maker.

Having said all that, I'm sure the Pioneer room correction software is good & probably adequate, in most cases.

With 5.1 the SUB EQ is not necessary, as Audyssey will still EQ your single SW.

Do not think the Pioneer will EQ the SW; don't know for sure.

Thanks SP.
One more question; Denon quality good enough? Hope I don't bother you too much.
But I will come back to you once the final decision is made, to ask you about how to set up and connecting.

Don't mind; I've owned 3 Denons: first one NO problems, until lightning got it after 10 Years.

Other 2 have both been back to Denon, one Twice & the other will have to go a Second time, before the warranty expires.

So, not very reliable to me, but, inexpensive for the features provided & reliability seems to be higher on the X4000, from what I've read.

I would go with the Yamaha 3030. Decent power with very clean sound in the most reliable chassis available.
Combined with some external amplification and internal parametric eq on all channels including subwoofer is
tough to beat right now.

@SP, you mentioned Denon 4520 earlier, its price has dropped in Europe but still a bit more than twice the cost compared to X4000. Is it really worth that?

I was thinking about you said that with this AVR I could add speakers in the future if needed. Also, I might be able to run the whole 5.1 system in case the CAV150 run into problem in the future since it's quite old as well.

About Yamaha, I heard their quality issues, perhaps their high end AVR would be better quality. People talks a lot about the 3030..

X4000 will probably work for you.

1st page of X4000 Thread has comparison of both models.

Keep in mind if your CAV150 amp dies, with the X4000, you could have issues driving YOUR Speakers.

So, may need to replace the CAV150, should it die.

With the 4520, you may not need to do so.

Thanks SP

I went to this shop known by a friend.
The owner said that he doesn't have the Denon X4000 in stock, but he offered me Marantz SR7008 for the same price as the X4000.

Shall I wait for the Denon or take the Marantz?

Marantz is essentially the same & slightly better; it has 9 amps, so, if you wanted to run 9, you'd still only use 4 amps from the SR7008.

Some components are supposed to be better on the Marantz.

So, yes get that for the same price; however, some people like the look of the Denon face better.

The guy just informed me that he will have the X4000 for 700€, and SR7008 for 825€. But he also have 4520 for 1500€, as I mentioned about it when I was in his shop. Now what?

Another hint...
Not only we have the best beers and chocolates, we also got a famous F1 track, as well as a world diamond center.
