I've read mixed reviews thus far on the 838. I'm in the same boat as you. I need a new receiver and this one is very well optioned out. But I'm not crazy about all the negative reviews/problems.

I'm also considering the Pioneer Elite VSX-80, SC-81 and the Yamaha Aventage VS-X1040.

The 838 will have more power but power by itself doesn't come across as an upgrade unless you're current AVR is clipping. If you want to hear a real difference get new speakers.

Buy the receiver with a 30 day return option - if you do not like like it, or feel you will not benefit from it -
then return it and keep the current receiver.

I'm assuming you're running the TX-SR605 model Onkyo, yes? You mentioned an "N" in your original post which would indicate a "network" model, but the "600" series didn't begin using networking abilities, if I'm not mistaken, until the TX-NR609...

At any rate, I too own a 605 and don't feel the need to upgrade until mine takes a dump as well -- OR if/when "Ultra HD" media arrives with new resolution codecs, resolution for passthrough, etc. OR if I want much, much more power than what the 605 can do now (a topic of much debate whenever this is brought up)...

I'm wondering what kind of amperage I'd have to get into to begin noticing a major increase in performance over the "rated" 90 watts per channel (two channels driven according to Onk) of my 605...sounds like you're wondering something similar...

Whatever you do -- don't use Bose speakers...you're not doing that (based on your member name) are you?

EDIT: I see you're running Bostons as speakers...what's up with the Bose in your name then?

Go for it; it is upgradeable to Dolby Atmos, it has the new AccuEQ, it has more power than your 605, it is recent (Network, tons of cool things, ...), this is 2014 (2007 was seven years ago), life is short, you only have one chance @ it, play hard, take risks, just get it.

I understand what you're saying regarding the upgrade to Dolby Atmos (jury is still out on that one for those of us, like me, who don't know a lot about it yet) and the extra power (though it's STILL negligible whether or not that kind of power jump will make a NOTICEABLE difference from the 605)...but don't you think it's a little ridiculous to suggest to him that he should trade up for this new unit "just because" our 605's came out in '07 and it's now 2014? Sure...life IS indeed short (I feel my morality every day and it scares the crap outta me) but that doesn't mean that if my 2008 model car is doing just fine for my needs that I SHOULD trade it in JUST because it's a few years old...

Ridiculous? No, my suggestion is valid and solidly thought out on firm ground.

Nice meeting you.

"Solidly thought out on firmer ground"?

I think you're in the wrong forum...

What was so "valid" and "solidly thought out" about suggesting that he dump his current receiver just because it's 2014?

Good night!

I replied to the OP's original post, and not in the mood of explaining more or arguing. And if you don't like the use of my words I cannot change my style just for you.

And I'm on the right forum, oh yes I am.

Take my suggestion for what it is, a simple and friendly one, to the OP.

Oh, you explained plenty -- like suggesting to the poor guy that he should dump his 605 because it's now "2014" and he needs to take chances because life is short...and yet you continue to cling to:

...yes...by suggesting your comment has been "solidly thought out on firmer ground"?

Can you at least explain what that means?

Telling him to get rid of his AVR "just because" is a "simple and friendly" suggestion?

They changed a lot of hardware and software (room correction) this year in the 838. I would wait until the new eq, dolby atmos, hdmi 2.0 and hdcp 2.2 sort out. I don't think any brand got it all right this year. No rush to get into 4k video or even dolby atmos audio. 2015 will be a better year all around to upgrade. Your sound quality won't be much different. Especially with dropping audyssey xt32.

...Or if he can find a TX-NR818 ... somehere ... somehow. ...And IF! ...Dolby Atmos doesn't ring two or four bells overhead.

By the way, how much can you get an 838 for nowadays?

* IntelliVolume, you are right; I was completely wrong in my opinion and suggestion and wording and all that jazz. Thank you very much kindly and friendly and good night again.

Cool man; everyone is entitled to his opinion, his suggestion, and respect. ...We might disagree sometimes with other's choice on their suggestion, and wordings, and that's just fine too.

in my opinion if your 605 is still working great then why spend another $1,000 to replace it.... I have the TX-NR 818 and love it and was thinking of replacing it with the 838 to get Atmos, but i looked at the spec's and i think it's not as good as my 818... first i don't have a 4K TV nor do i need Blu-tooth and wireless and what ive read you can't do more then 7.2, it does not have audessy and so forth and on and on.... the only thing would be Dolby Atmos and thats still in it's infant stage. so unless you have lots of money go for it but i would take a deep breath and wait till the end of the year till things with atmos settles in.
I guess what i'm saying if your 605 is not doing well then upgrade but if your wanting to replace it thinking you will be blown away...forget that it may sound better but not for a $1,000
