Onkyo 838...surround back and height options

I'm looking at purchasing an 838 for my main receiver. Can I use the pre-outs to a separate amp to power the front height speakers if I wire the onboard amplifier to power the surround back? Or do I have to look at a 9.2 channel receiver to get both surround back and front height speakers out of the Onkyos?

The 838 is not expandable beyond 7CH, rather you would have to upgrade to the 1030 if you wanted 9CH in an Onkyo model.
