Question Used receivers

Would you buy a used receiver off eBay, or kijiji?
Or is there much that could go wrong with them ?
I'm thinking speakers could be blown but I don't know what could go wrong with a receiver

I've purchased two receivers of craigslist in the last 3 years or so. Not sure how much different that would be from ebay or kijiji.

Defective receiver could have bad amp channels, non working HDMI outputs, missing remote, be prone to suddenly shut off, etc. There are definitely things that could go wrong.

I've had good luck with my purchases but they weren't from ebay.

Another route is refurbished. I just purchased a Yamaha HTR-4066 (equivalent to RX-V475) receiver for $179 total, with a 1 year warranty. Many credit cards will add an extra year. Cost me less than I would have paid on eBay with no warranty.

I have had very good experience's with e bay and avr's. I picked up two, that were near perfect, a Denon that was like new, then ended up getting a monster Onkyo from an AVS member here.
I would look in our own classifieds here first.
I would estimate 99% honest and offer a great deal. I love my big Onkyo. Could have never afforded this model otherwise.

Don't know if you'll find 7.1 for under $200, but newegg.com have quite a few starting at $299 for a 7.1 such as this one. They also have 5.1 receivers starting at $149.

Be sure to read the fine print on your credit card. Could be wrong, but I do not know of any that cover refurbished.

^^
AFAIK (at least with all my cards AMEX, MC, Visa) ... they all extend the 1 year refurbished warranty to 2 years as long as the mfr still provides the warranty on the refurbished unit.

Thanks for the heads up. I just read the fine print. "Used and pre-owned" items are not covered, but no such exclusion for refurbished.

Sorry, but a "refurbished" unit is probably pre-owned and used. I would suggest calling one of the card companies for clarification (rather than finding out the hard way).

I know that when I called Discover they said that "Refurbished or re-manufactured" units would not be eligible for the extended warranty.

I didn't even know there was such a thing. As this credit card warranty thing. Good to know.

Yup. Can come in handy too. Replacing an HDMI board out of warranty can cost $400-$500. Also worth considering purchasing an extended warranty on a refurbished unit or one purchased on eBay where there may be no mfr's warranty at all.
