Do I need a switcher? (Consumer level)

Guys I just moved and I am re-arranging some things.. I'm trying to figure out if I need an a/b/c switcher or not..

If I connect all my devices to my tv Samsung (65 es8000) via hdmi (ps4, dvr, Apple TV) and then out of the tv via optical into Samsung cheap surround will it play audio from each source? Or do I need to send the optical out directly to the Samsung from each device in which case I would need a switcher..

Any info much appreciated ...

Thanks

Depends on the quality of audio you want to listen to. A TV will generally only pass PCM 2.0 and DD 5.1 over the optical output (some can pass DTS 5.1), but none can pass the HD audio from a Blu Ray disc. If your Samsung AVR does not accept HDMI, then connecting the sources to the TV is likely your easiest option.

Sure. Either check your TV Owner's manual or simply connect the PS4 to the TV and play a DD and DTS movie track.

Moot point as you don't have any device that can "accept" HD audio as HD audio can only pass over HDMI.

You can only hear the difference if you have good speakers and room acoustics.

Thanks guys. Yea thought so.. For tv I don't care too much I just like decent sureound.. But for my studio the acoustics and speakers cost me a fortune and that's only 2 sets of stereo and sub haha..

Does anyone know if the Samsung tv will pass DD or DTS trough optical as i don't have a means to try right now but would like to know before ordering switcher. Thanks

I just read the manual online and mentions nothing.. But from what I can find about Samsung TV's they do not pass DD or DTS trough Optical.. Except for the newer 9000 series .. I actually used to have the 55 9000 but the 65 es 8000 replaced it.. So if anyone knows for certain about the 8000 please let me know. Thanks
