Onkyo TX-NR636 will work with atmos as 7.1 ???

Hello. I currently own an Onkyo TX-NR636 that I barely know how to take advantage of.

I have a 5.1 Pioneer Andrew Jones setup, except that the subwoofer is actually a Polk Audio PSW10 subwoofer.

Now, I wish to make it a 7.1 system, and simply add 2 more bookshelf speakers from the same brand. However, I see these "ATMOS" enabled speakers for onkyo that are supposed to work with my AV receiver.

My question is... can I actually use those ATMOS enabled speakers to complete my system, and make it 7.1, or are those atmos speakers supposed to be used only AFTER a 7.1 system is setup?

They seem to be used only as a 5.1 system addon, to go on top of existing speakers, and bounce the sound being pointed at the ceiling. I'm afraid that even movies with ATMOS soundtracks won't really take a noticeable advantage to these...

Yes, you can use those Onkyo speakers placed on top of either your existing FL/FR speakers or SL/SR speakers. The 636 is a 7CH AVR which when used with a 5.1 setup can add 2 "height" speakers, either as 2 ceiling speakers or as 2 Dolby enabled upward firing speakers. How well they work will depend on the texture and height of your ceiling.
