External Amp for Studio 100's

I have an old pair of Studio 100's and CC-570 center channel with in-ceiling speakers. I'm running a Elite SC-77 Receiver. Will an external 5-Channel amp really help my speakers..especially the front 3 speakers?

Thanks,

Kevin

There is no reason to think that an external amp will make any difference in sound quality.

Would it "really help"? Probably not, especially if you aren't currently noticing any performance deficiencies when playing at louder volumes.

If you think you might benefit from external amplification, you don't need a high-powered 2-, 3- or 5-channel amp. Something like a gently-used Emotiva UPA-2 (or UPA-200) for your mains will suffice (with the AVR powering the CC speaker and surrounds).

Hey Kev. Broadly speaking, if your Elite is capable of generating sufficient power to cleanly play your Paradigms to your preferred maximum volume levels in your room, the addition of an external amp with higher rated power will not make any real improvement to the sound.

Your power needs depend on a number of factors including the sensitivity of your speakers (which we can presume is about 88 to 89dB/1W/1m for Studio 100's, unless you can give us a specific version), the distance from the speakers to your listening seat(s), your absolute maximum/never exceeded volume levels (relative +/- dBMV) for music and movies and lastly, the general acoustic properties of the room.

If you're happy to supply us with a few of these details and a rough description of the room, we can have a crack at estimating your power needs and give you a fair idea of whether or not an external amp is warranted.

I will say from the outset though, that unless you sometimes listen at above 0dBMV ("reference") &/or you have a listening distance well beyond 12ft &/or a room greater than about 3000ft^3, it's unlikely your power needs will exceed the capabilities of the Elite SC-77. The SC-77 carries the THX Ultra2 Plus certification, which means that THX say it will play any commercially available multichannel program material (music and movies) to cinema reference level when hooked up to speakers with a minimum sensitivity of 89dB/1W/1m and an impedance of 3.2Ω min. in an "Ultra2 sized" room (up to 3000ft^3, 12ft or greater viewing distance).

The other thing I'd state is that even the very best speakers (yours are beauties BTW) routinely operate at levels of distortion (THD) and deviations from linearity in everyday use (say 95dBSPL @ 1m) that is 100's if not 1000's of times greater in magnitude than what the solid state amplifiers driving them are operating at. In short, someone smart once said: IF IT'S MOVING; IT'S DISTORTING! So if your searching for genuine sonic improvement, higher quality speakers and subs will always provide a superior return on your investment than solid state electronics.

Please get back to us if you want to know more Kev.

Thanks for the info everyone. Based on my small family room. It does not sound like I need the extra power.

Thanks,

Kevin

You've nailed it Kevin. Good objective thinking.

Now... how are you situated for subs? Can the lads on the sub board assist with recommendations on what to do with your $1000+ of "savings"?

Bingo!! We have a winner! A great subwoofer will
Put a grin on your face that will be hard to get rid of.

In your case an external amp will leave you scratching
Your head and muttering.."I think it sounds better..maybe."

I actually have 2 Power Sound Audio XV-15's. My wife wants to kill me sometimes due to the space they take up.

^ Awesome!

Mate, I reckon if the bride only wants to kill you "sometimes", you're right where you want to be with subwooferage.

I think your set up pretty damn good then.

I bought external amps for my Paradigm Signature 6's.
Outlaw Audio Mono-blocks. I can honestly say it
didn't make any difference in what i heard. Yes, that
was me sitting on the couch scratching my head.
i was just too stubborn to return them.

Wait... what? It's only due to the space they take up?

In the spirit of compromise, you could suggest the more discretely sized and manageable Rythmik E15HP (x4), from a great little business just up the road.

Purely in the interests of marital harmony of course.
