Preferred Atmos channel configuration

For those of you who have had Atmos in your systems for a while, which configuration do you prefer? I'm trying to decide whether to go 9.1.2 with front heights or 7.1.4 with front and rear overheads. Looking forward to your observations.

My expectation is that any kind of consensus will be elusive here. So much depends on your room, your speakers, what you're use to, and your personal preferences.

I have a 5.1.4 setup primarily because I never derived much value out of my back surround when I had 7.1 before. I'm super pleased with the 4 overheads but never tried front heights, so can't compare. However, basic common sense tells me that 4 overheads are going to be more immersive than an extra pair of speakers at the front of the room (where there's already at least 3 channels).

How many feet in front and behind the main seating position should the ceiling speakers be?

I think you should go with 4 overhead.

So, the logical next step is 7.1.4 for you.

I only have room for side surrounds in my room and setup, thus I have 5.1.4.
But I must admit I've been thinking about how I could do 7.1.4 in a different room!
