I am planning on getting a new Yamahaa receiver in about a month. I know this much:
I want:
1) HDMI 2.0a
2) HDCP 2.2
3) HDMI Passthrough when off and preferably switching while receiver is off
4) 7.1
5) latest sound field processing (Atmos not needed but would be nice)
6) This is to upgrade my Pioneer VSX-519v. I mention this because I want something more powerful in terms of output power (wattage).
I plan on dropping about $700. What other brands should I consider that do what I want in the same price range? I don't want Pioneer after finding out that they were sold.
I am willing to go up to $900 at most. $700 is kinda the sweet spot. I would do a refurbed Yamaha at that site everyone around here loves.
Are any new models coming out soon that people are excited about in this price range?
If I can get a much better amplifier in a receiver by spending more I would do so (while still keeping it under $900)
UPDATE 1:
I am serious. I just did my Marty subs about a month ago. So please help me out ;-)
Atmos would be nice. But it has to be in budget. If I did do Atmos, I'd only have 2 overhead speakers (not 4).

Yes you are correct IMO. The Yamaha will be the most reliable if it's not a lemon. The marantz may have the best sound, the yamaha is also good. The denon should sound equally as good but without the extra punch in the bass. Usually good amplifiers will give a nice bass punch at high volumes and as of late yamaha and marantz receivers can do that. Denons have a weighty bass but lack punch. At least that's what some of the reviews say.
. I'll do a quick comparison of a750 and x2200.
These are so new some manuals are not out yet.
The Denon x2200 falls about half way between Yamaha A750 & A850 in list price.
The 850 & 2200 have dolby atmos. The denon will add dts:x at some point. The a750
does have more legacy inputs and zone2 outputs than the 2200. The 2200 has 20% bigger
power supply, 2 outputs, a few more hdmi inputs and some subwoofer eq in the audyssey xt.
Yamaha has no independent crossovers nor eq on subwoofer out until a2050 model.
If you want to do the ceiling 3d surround sound thing the denon wins. Otherwise
the 750 is cheaper and yamaha has a better phone/tablet app. Better network and
hdmi handshake compatibility. That makes it very close.
I've read more also. The guts of Denon and Marantz are probably the same these days. So it sounds like going Denon is the best option as you are to an extent paying for the name of Marantz.
So, now I am leaning on these:
Denon X2200
Yamaha RX-A850
Denon X3200

Onkyo scares me because of the past issues. I'll look at the features and see though.
Right now, if I did go Denon I'd probably get the X3200since it is ratted at a higher wattage than the X2200. I'd probably have to wait for a sale though.
It is nice knowing that the DTS:X update will be coming.
Do the feature/spec comparison between the brands/models.
However be advised...
Regarding reliability the Yamaha AVRs are rated #1 , Denon is rated #4 ....

I have to ask though. If I have 7.1 source material and the speakers are set up up for 5.1.2, what happens? What if I have 5.1.2 as source material and the speakers set up for 7.1?
I have to say though, my room is more suited for a 5.1.2 configuration. Would it be OK to run 7.1 source using the overhead speakers of the 5.1.2 speaker configuration?
I guess I need to figure out how I would exactly set this system up. I can't go to a $1500 receiver. Just no way.
I added some pics. I want to mount speakers on the beams. I already have the rears mounted but they are not aimed properly.

You'll probably get more "wow" with a 5.1.2 setup.
A 7.1 source will simply be downmixed. I wouldn't be concerned about that.
