"Official" Pioneer Elite AVR's.. SC-95, SC-97 SC-99

Update 7-30-2016 regarding the SC-95, SC-97 & SC-99: HDR10, HDMI 2.0a, DTS-X

I received the HDR10 update for my 2016 Vizio P75-C1. HDR10 is working perfectly for me with the following configuration:

Samsung K8500 player using a single BJC FE certified cable to AVR for audio and video. The player is set to 2160 for resolution and YCbCr 4:4:4 for colorspace.

Input to BD set with the AVR set to use 4:4:4

Output via HDMI 1 to input HDMI 1 on the P75. Subsampling set to "on" (using a BJC Series 1 35ft HDMI cable)

The player is syncing perfectly for every disk I own and every disk is properly passing HDR metadata (except for The Life of Pi which has a metadata issue with the P75).

Based on my results, I believe we can conclude that the SC-95 is IN FACT HDMI 2.0a enabled.

I believe with proper setup and MOST IMPORTANTLY... MODERN CERTIFIED OR HI-QUALITY CABLES... you should have no problem using the SC line as I've outlined for an HDR capable system.

There is existing information about the DTS-x update but I've asked for confirmation on that as well

I believe new today: All with HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2, Atmos plus DTS X w firmware update.... all 9.2 channels AVR's

I downloaded the manual for the SC-95. It has various Atmos settings, one being a 7.2.4 using the pre-out for your Surround Backs. However, I couldn't confirm if a straight 5.2.4 layout is possible (in my case I would eliminate the Surround Backs due to my room limitations). Any further insight, folks?

It was just announced so I would say that you know a lot more than anyone else.

The features seem pretty identical between the models. Some slight power increasees seems to be the only difference between them.

5.2.4 is the config I want to do as well. I sent a note to Pioneer asking what the expected availability will be in the US.

The SC-95 manual doesn't show any Atmos configs for a 5.x.x setup? Odd.

The big difference between the 99 and 97 seems to be the USB Dac and the 7.1 multi-channel in.

Would the the firmware upgrade would require a trip to the factory or local dealer?

In looking at the manual, I don't see a difference between speaker configurations of the two amps ( 9.2.2 or 7.2.4, etc. with additional amp). I don't see a 5.2.4 possibility (might be too much detail for my brain).

I guess Pioneer has dropped HDBaseT. Maybe their partner Integra or Onkyo will keep it, or maybe the after market will be the only source for long run HDMI.

You guys are on to something here. I'm thinking this is an oversight on Pioneer's part. If one could have 7.2.4 with an extra amp. Why not 5.2.4 without the extra amp? We may have to wait for someone to buy an amp and test it.

maybe - on page 21 of the 97-99 manual. There is an explanation of the 7.2.4. configuration. This configuration assumes that an extra amp will be attached to the surround back out. So, if one would chooses that configuration, and not hook up the extra amp, they would be left with a 5.2.4 configuration. Just a guess.

Is it still the same with all pioneers that there are NO individual crossover speaker settings? It just has one all across the board?

Can anyone find any mention of HDR support in the news releases for these top tier Pioneer receivers. Yamaha press releases mentions this for their top tier receiver releases.

In the overview section for the SC-95 it says:

"The Elite SC-95 supports transmission of 4K/60P/4:4:/24-bit video signals and High Dynamic Range (HDR) signals..."

I just received this response directly from Pioneer...I'm a bit disappointed.

My initial email inquiry:
Inquiry Type:Features and Spec
Product Type : Home-Audio Video Products-Audio Video Receiver Model Number :SC-95 Inquiry:
"Very interested in the new SC-95. However, I couldn't find an option to do 5.2.4 Dolby Atmos in the manual. Is this possible? (I wouldn't have Surround Back Channels due to my room limitations). Also, what about HDMI 2.0a on th SC-95? Thank you. Long-time Pioneer fan."

Response:
Dear: Kurt

Unfortunately not, a 7.2.4 is possible with the use of the FRONT or SURROUND BACK PRE-OUTS but not 5.2.4 which even I find strange....

I thought of that...maybe its possible...

Don't most receivers matrix the Surround Back sounds into the 'regular' surrounds when playing a 7.1 source on a 5.1 system? The question would be what would happen here with the SC-95.

yes - I agree. It is not a deal breaker for me because I have extra amps. I am looking for an AVR that would give me at least 7.2.4 and maybe 7.2.6. I would only be using the amps in the AVR for the height speakers. I have two pioneer elites, and would go again if possible.

I have to think there are many people who would like to get started with Atmos on a 5.2.4 system.

Was just looking at Pio's site and saw them. I think I might pull the trigger shortly. I'm rocking a VSX-21THX from 2009'ish and been itching to upgrade. Was considering the SC-91 a few months back, but thought I should hold out for a higher model to make my upgrade more effective.

Im considering the SC-95 or SC-97. I'm not sure the 99 is worth it. I don't need the USB DAC. Is the extra depth precision for MCACC, and this high-end low leakage power transformer worth the extra cost? Power is the same as the 97. What other improvements would likely give it the Air Studios cert?

Ive got some BB gift cards burning a hole in my pocket!

I am going to go out on a limb here and question the answer you received from Pioneer technical support. I am not questioning you - I am saying I think the guy in Pioneer technical support is giving you the wrong answer. I just can't believe that Pioneer would make a nine channel amp with Atmos that would not drive 4 height speakers. Please do not be offended; I am saying the guy from Pioneer is wrong - not you. I guess we will have to wait awhile to see who is right on this one.

Looks like not much improvement from last years model, thinking I may make the jump to the new Yamaha pre-pro and 11ch amp. I love pioneer and still use my sc09tx, but looks like to me Yamaha may be a better choice

Yes, they're not showing up anywhere yet. I can't find anyone that's coded them into their databases. I sent Pioneer a note on Saturday asking for estimated retail availability.

I currently have a Pioneer SC-65 in a 7.1 Preamp/Amp setup with an Emotiva XPA-3 handling the L/C/R channels. I've been extremely happy with this Pioneer receiver as it visually lets me know what type of signal is being received and how it is being handled. All the major Codecs are supported. I'm glad that I can eventually move to a 7.1.4 configuration in the future by moving to a new receiver.

But....I'm confused by the inability for a 5.1.4 or 5.2.4 Dolby setup with the new announcements. I mean, all the Pre-Outs are there. Why wouldn't this be a simple setup in their menu? A software fix?

It doesn't make sense and a glaring error by Pioneer if this is true. I mean - - isn't the objective to sell more Dolby & 4K capable receivers? Bizarre.

Pioneer is not considering the "Front Height" speakers to be part of an Atmos configuration (and doesn't use Rear Height at all) and so represents an Atmos 5.2.4 setup as 9.2.2 as noted in the Owner's manual image below. Although note the only 5.2.4 option available is 5.1 + Front Height + Top Middle, otherwise you would have to use either of the two 7.2.4 options (using 2CH external amp) to get 7.1 + Top Forward + Top Backward.

The somewhat similar model SC-91 with the 8-24-15 firmware has the following in the Change History:

Ver 1-284-009-507-193
- Support transmission of HDR(High Dynamic Range) signal adopted by next generation 4k Blu-ray.

Inside pictures of the new SC-LX89 (~SC-99)

HD fever (in french) has a discussion and pictures of the inside of the SC-LX89 EU version (there is also a page on the SC-LX79). Also on the web page is a link to a pioneer pdf of the EU model specs in french:
