The "OFFICIAL" 2016 Denon "S-Series" / "X-Series" AVR Owner's Thread + FAQ

2016 Denon AVR models ---> S510BT/S720W/S920W/X1300W/X2300W/X3300W/X4300H/X6300H

The D+M Group USA (Denon/Marantz) has released information on the new 2016 Denon models. The X6300H will be the highest model released for 2016 while the 2015 Denon X7200WA will remain the "flagship" D+M AVR and has its own thread (actually 2 of them, (1) X7200WA Owners thread, and (2) Denon 2014 Atmos Owner's thread).

What's new or to be added via firmware update for the 2016 models?

S720W/S920W/X1300W/X2300W/X3300W/X4300H/X6300H
- Dual band 802.11n Wifi (5Ghz added to previously only single band 2.4Ghz)
- Bluetooth Class 1 (X4300H/X6300H only) - increased from 33ft to 98ft/30m
- Auto Lip sync delay (increased from 200ms to 500ms adjustment)
- RC Source Select (allows changing of an HDMI standby pass through source while the AVR is in Standby mode - 2015 and older models require powering on the AVR to change the pass through source)
- Playback of high resolution audio files (DSD 5.6 Mhz - increased from 2.8 Mhz) via USB and network
- DTS:X / DTS Neural:X (via firmware update on X3300W and lower models (Sep 2016) and installed at the factory on the X4300H/X6300H)
- Video Mode - new "Bypass" setting (S920W/X2300W only as a result of the Video Conversion setting being removed)
- Audyssey MultEQ Editor phone iOS/Android app ($20) - using the included Audyssey mic, provides the ability to customize target curves, save them, and stream back to the AVR (April 2017)
- The "H" series models (X4300H/X6300H only) include a HEOS module which will allow streaming the currently dozen music services using the HEOS iOS/Android app to the "H" model as well as allow streaming 2CH sources to one or more HEOS wireless speakers placed around the home
- Auto Update (X4300H/X6300H only) - (default - OFF), allows for firmware updates while the unit is in Standby
- SAVE & LOAD via USB (X4300H/X6300H only) - firmware updated April 2017, (Setup - General - Save & Load; config.avr)
- Auro 3D (X6300H only) - able to use the Surround Back L on board amp to power the VOG/Top Surround speaker instead of using Subwoofer pre-out 2 to an external amp
- Dolby Vision + HLG - capability added via firmware update Sep 2017
- Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) (added via firmware update June 2018)
- Airplay 2 (X4300H/X6300H only) - firmware updated August 2018

What was dropped from the 2015 models?

S920W/X2300W
- Analog --> HDMI conversion .

X4300H/X6300H
- Front Wide speakers (in fact all major brands dropped Front Wide speakers on their 2016 models )
- Web Control (ie. can no longer access the AVR via its IP address)
- vTuner - must use TuneIn (on board or using HEOS app) for internet radio which doesn't allow the user to manually add new stations as is the case with vTuner
- iPod/iPhone connectivity via USB
- Video Select (iPod/USB)
- Spotify using a FREE Spotify account via the HEOS app

See post 7 for additional specific 2016 vs. 2015 model differences

-------------------------

- All "S" series models have a 2 year warranty if purchased new/open-box from an authorized dealer
- All "X" series models have a 3 year warranty (2 years in Canada) if purchased new/open-box from an authorized dealer
- All refurbished models have a 1 year warranty if purchased from an authorized refurb dealer

Welcome to the Official 2016 Denon AVR-S/X models thread (S510BT/S720W/S920W/X1300W/X2300W/X3300W/X4300H/X6300H).

If this is your first visit to this thread, and you want to ask a question about one of the 2016 Denon AVR models, either one that you own or one that you are thinking of buying, please provide the following information to allow for better responses to your questions:

(a) Identify the model number in question (eg. X2300W), as there are 8 different models (S and X series) discussed in this thread. Also if you have not posted in several days since your initial post, please post the model # again so we don't have to back track to learn which model you are referencing.

(b) Identify what you've done so far to troubleshoot the issue and what the front panel is displaying if an audio issue, (also take a few minutes to review the Troubleshooting section provided in post ##3 as your question may already be answered there),

(c) Unless you indicate what settings have been changed, the assumption will be that all settings are on the factory defaults (ie. usually "Auto"),

(d) If the advice given seems to simplistic or obvious, don't shoot the advice giver as we have no idea of the level of your technical understanding,

(e) If there is no response to your post, it either means no one knows the answer or it has simply been overlooked so please repost if you still haven't resolved your issue,

(f) If you post a question in this thread and are given advice and either it or some other advice (eg. Denon phone support, Denon "Ask a Question" email support) resolves your issue, have the common courtesy to post back what solution resolved your issue so others can learn from it as well,

(g) If the issue is not user error or not just a misunderstanding on how the AVR works, please call Denon support so the issue is registered,

(h) When responding to another post that is providing assistance to you, please press the "Quote" button in the lower right corner of that other poster's response so that response is also listed with your new post to provide some context, and,

(i) If you don't live in either the USA or Canada, please either indicate your country location in your profile or your post as some Denon models from other regions in the world differ in configuration from their USA/Canada counterparts otherwise responses made will be regarding the USA/Canada models.

This worked great! also worked with the PS4 for their HDR mode. Thank you sir as always!

I have one more issue i cant seem to fix which is the Zone 2 option. I have my speakers which are in the dining room connected as it instructs into the surround back. I have my Bluesound connected via optical in the cd and analogue in the cd also. But i simply cannot get Zone 2 to play the cd option.
Did you set Amp Assign = Zone 2? Did you power on Zone 2 and select the CD source? Does your Bluesound output audio over both optical and analog simultaneously? Try unplugging the optical cable as a test.

@jdsmoothie
So...the S Series announcement came out in March (receivers available in April) and this 2016 thread started in May...do we have to wait 2 more months for the **Official** 2017 Denon thread? Are we looking at July for availability of the lower end of the X series?

I've never found myself waiting for the new arrivals like this before!!! Trying SO HARD to follow sage advice and scale back my final AVR decision and save the remaining $$ for a future speaker upgrade...but I want what I want and I want it sooner rather than later!!!

Finally got it figured out! so i forgot to assign the analogue in input assign. As soon as i edited that boom i could select CD. I thought for some reason that it would automatically have it but i see why they dont. Anyway all working now. Shocker that Denon's customer service would have had to escalate this issue.

Have to say its a pretty impressive amp though for the price, just a shame this amp has no phono assignment though. Had to dust off my Nad Phono Preamp. I didnt need it with the Marantz amp that this replaced.

Last year's lower "X" series were released in May. I'll start up the new thread in week or two. :)

As noted on the back of the AVR, the 4th analog input defaults to CD so you shouldn't have had to make any changes in INPUT ASSIGN unless you had previously changed that.

yeah man these babies are just too good! one question about mounting them to the ceiling though: do you place them sideways or in normal vertical position?
trustkill123,
I have the AHT-200 satellites and mounted/hung them in the normal vertical position to the ceiling, angled at about 25-30 to the MLP. I have 9 speakers now overall, and do enjoy the Marantz SR7008, and what it does, but am lurking for a new ATMOS receiver, should help with the upgraditus.

I'm considering buying either an X2300W or X3300W, but before I do I've got a question concerning upscaling to 4K. I've got an Oppo 203 as my primary video source. Is it preferable for the Oppo to do the upscaling or the receiver? I'm guessing it's the Oppo, but I'm a noob when it comes to AV stuff and wanted reassurance before I pull the trigger on either the 2300/3300.

One other question, will the 2300 display the gui at 4K?

Thanks in advance for your time,

Bill
Oppo should be better. But, the display may do the best job (definitely if it's a recent Sony and probably if it's a recent Samsung). I would experiment, allowing each of the three to do the work, and see what you think.

Such dilemmas...
I've been saving up for some time now and with the current Denon promotion I need to decide if it is worth it to wait for the price drop on the X3300W when the 2017's hit the street or to jump now. The X3300W is the most I can consider at my current budget. It hits all of my "needs" and most of my "wants".

The X4300H would be nice to future proof for back surrounds and makes HEOS speakers worth a look, but with HDMI 3 on the horizon (and the sorry state of the remainder of my AV setup) the 4300 would need to drop quite a bit for me to justify (er, I mean rationalize :D ).

I gave up scanning the "*Official* 2015 Denon" thread for clues as to what to expect for change of model year discounts...any thoughts on what I might expect?
Sent you a Private Meassage

Thanks for the reply. I've got a Samsung JS9500, so I'll definitely sample each to see what looks the best to me.
My JS9500 definitely does a better job upconverting than any of my components.

Denon 4300H - Sound levels go up and down

While watching programs on our XBR65Z9D, with sound going through AVR to speakers via Denon X4300H, the sound goes from what it was set at, down to barely hearable, then sometime up to a too loud level. Variation can be a couple of minutes between changes and have nothing to do with a commercial coming on the program. Driving us crazy with having to reset volume levels constantly. Happens on more than one channel..

Input is from Spectrum cable. Output is to a 5.2 setup. Connection is through HDMI3, ARC. High end HDMI cables and 12GA copper to speakers.

Can anyone provide a clue why this is happening and what can be done to eliminate it?

Thx

I have some issues with my brand new AVR-x4300h, I have audio drops with Dolby True HD... sometimes for a few milliseconds, sometimes for seconds, and sometimes it never goes back on ... I need to switch to another audio track to get the audio back on. With standard Dolby 5.1 I don't have any issues... Could it be my HDMI cable? I don't know if it's up to date (HDMI 2.0 etc...).

I will get a new cable but I was wondering if it's a known issue.

BluRay player is an Oppo 93.

thanks.

100% didnt change anything, it seems the optical assign had been assigned automatically for CD but the analogue had not. The only few that were available from the go were Ipod, Network and Tuner for Zone 2.
