Denon x2100

This receiver is about 2 years old, can it be upgraded for Dolby Atmos or do I just have to trash it?

You don't have to trash it, although if you want Dolby Atmos you will indeed have to upgrade to a 2015 (eg. X2200W) or 2016 (eg. X2300W) model.

It cannot do Dolby Atmos nor does his have HDMI 2.0 and HDCP for 4K copy protected sources.

That however does not make it a bad receiver. It is still a fine receiver that many people would like to have. If it doesn't meet your needs sell it and put the money towards and newer model.
