Need help in buying a Power Amp

I'm looking to buy a USED 2 channel Power Amp 500W per channel @ 8Ω to run the Polk Audio RTi A9's. I have some of them on my list which are Crown CDI-2000, Crown XTI 2002 and Crown XLS-2502, all these are 2 channel Power Amp 475W per channel @ 8Ω. I reside in Canada. My budget is $500 CAD which is equal to $385 USD. Need some professional input from you guys if u know of something better or cheaper models of the same configuration. Thanks

Wow; $500 CAD for 500 watts per channel is a bargain. Don't look much further

The Crowns are good amps. Try searching in the DIY forum as us DIYers will be by far the largest group of pro amp users. I have 23ch of pro amps in use, but no Crowns as Yamahas tend to be better value here. I can recommend them highly too, especially the PxxxxS series.
Fan noise and horrible bright LEDs are two things to consider as some pro amp's fans are as loud as a vacuum. I believe the Crowns are staged so only come on at the speed needed and are quiet, but I've no personal experience. Send them an email and ask to be sure. I've never heard the fans in my Yamahas come on, ever at home.

I've owned 4 Crown XLS series amps over the past few years. Never did hear a fan from any of them. They do come on when needed but are stepped up to meet cooling demands. If you're driving your speakers hard enough to have them come on it's not likely you'll hear those fans over the speakers. FWIW the RTi A9 isn't 'power hungry' as some like to say - they are 90db efficient. Same as my song towers. And relatively easy to drive. Those Polk's are no different. 500w per channel? You'll never use half that.

The cdi and xti most likely have blow driers for fans, very similar to the dsi series. I have dsi series amps running my mains right now, Honestly they are my favorite amp I've used to date. The xls amps I used were quite similar and were completely silent from more than a foot away.

Sort of agree, sort of disagree... When I had my a9's I used the xpr2 to drive them, they would take every last watt that amp could give and still sound "ok" (low audible distortion) but the dynamic range would compress so much they just couldn't give a realistic presentation. It's partly due to my love for loud music and partly due to my seating position being 18' from the speakers.
So, I agree in that if you need to use the power.. You should look to more efficient speakers instead.. Disagree in that they do well(ish) with oodles of power.

Really 600 wpc into a rated 50-500wpc polk? What db's were you hitting at 18'. An average 95-100db is as loud as I can take for more than a song or two at my MLP @ 16'

Yes really.
About 103db with no room left for dynamics.. And not for extended periods..
My room is heavily treated and 100db(25watts) is nothing nowadays with the high sensitivty speakers I use now.

Would I suggest trying this out for yourself, no.. But we all live and learn. Luckily I didn't fry the crossovers or mids..
They did however provide as much bass(running fullrange) as the pair of psw505 subs I had at the time as well.

I know, but he's using 6x the power to hear at the same db level same distance as I am. 500 wpc more. I'm all for it, I just thought those speakers would go up in smoke at 600watts. Those XPR's are so badazz, I want one just to have one, even though 60% of the power would never be tapped in my set up.

I have 400 watts for my 92db speakers and I probably only use 80-100 watts...its nice turning the mv to 0 and knowing you still can go higher

Your klipsch are also 11db more sensitive. Try the xpa1L, similar sound signature and the 30watts class a is pretty sweet.I don't regret selling the xpr2.

You have 2 db higher sensitivity speakers, use 80-100 watts, now add 520-500 watts to reach that level lol. I want to try it, nope, no I don't

August 2014 when I sold it, it took a while to unload.. they were still available from emo at the time so were selling for cheap. I saw a couple in the classifieds the other day but are being sold at quite a premium over what retail was. He'll get it though, they are nice.

They are quite the amplifier, you can tell they mean business. Emotiva on the used market seems to be climbing in price on the used market for the xpa and xpr any gen from what I've seen on ebay, at least over the last two years. I could never justify an amp of that caliber with my speakers, but if I could, it would be sitting up front loud and proud. Do/did they run hot?

Sorry for the derail tostudd.

Upa700 ran cool
Mps2 ran pretty warm when pushed
Xpr2 ran hot enough even at idle to burn someone with sensitive skin
Xpa2 and xpa5 ran pretty cool
Xpa1L was a space heater in class A mode while running much cooler in a/b mode

Don't count on it. I've posted here before independent tests of a couple of Klipsch speakers and on average they over sell the sensitivity by 6dB or so. There is no way they're 101dB with 30Hz extension in a box that size. They'd break Hoffman's Iron Law.
