Thanks for all your help team.
You must have at least a 5.1.2 configuration (ie. 2 height speakers) in order to experience either DTS:X or Atmos so with your 5.1 setup you'll only hear the DD TrueHD or DTS HD-MA audio tracks when playing either an Atmos or DTS:X BD which is why DTS Virtual:X would be a nice feature for you. However, as noted by the link below, DTS Virtual:X is only first launching in July with the firmware update to the NR1608 likely later this fall so no experience with it at this point on AVRs.

Sure. You can set Video Conversion to OFF but lose GUI overlay in the process.

Any NR1608 owners know if the volume level overlay also works when outputting 4K 60 video?

I can test this for you... What's an easy way for me to generate 4K 60p video? I have a UHD bluray and 4K Amazon Fire TV connected to my NR1608.

Many (probably most or all) UHD players transmit their internal menus at 4k/60.

After a long and difficult negotiation with the wife, I think I've managed to secure a massive win. Big house renovations due to start soon. She wants expensive light fittings. I don't. But I could justify that if I was to change up my entertainment system a little (a lot). She's given me the green light to remaster it. I'm planning to go for the LG 55 OLED B6 and sell our 2015 Sony W805c 1080p set (which is ace), PS4 Pro and sell the original PS4, Marantz NR1607/8 and sell the NR1601, keep my mission m3 speaker system but add two ceiling speakers to the mix. All of which will cost an amount she will never find out about. Strangely the deal clincher was 'well if the room is being replastered we may as well wall mount a bigger TV, run the cabling through the walls, wall mount the speakers and get rid of the stands. More space!

Quite excited about this project now. And I guess if I get the ceiling speakers wired in and fitted then DTS: virtual X may be less important.

Thanks for your help all. I'll let you know how I get on in August when it's all done!

Doesn't seem to work. My NR1608 doesn't display the volume overlay or any other on-screen menus when my UHD player is set to output 4K. This happens when I'm showing blu-ray players home screen (of apps), it's menus, or playing a UHD blu-ray.

If I press the Marantz setup button it dismisses the blu-ray player's video and switches to 1080p and overlays its menu GUI. If I switch the blu-ray player's output resolution from Auto or 4K to 1080p then the Marantz volume overlay appears (works).

Ah bummer. I guess I shouldn't have expected this from D&M at this price point as there are slightly older and even more expensive AV receivers from D&M that do 4K but aren't able to show GUI overlay over 4K sources either. Thanks for checking anyway.

GUI overlay on 4k/60 sources is only possible on the Marantz SR6011/SR6012 (and higher) and the Denon X3300W/X3400H (and higher) models.

That will of course depend on whether you purchase the 2016 NR1607 (then posting in the 2016 Owner's thread) or the 2017 NR1608 (posting in this thread).

something that jumped out at me in your post. Your talking about running cables through your wall, and a bunch of brand new shiny 4k components.

do your research on cables. 4k uses much more bandwidth than 1080p, if at all possible, test the cables before running it in your wall. also, when running the HDMI cable, consider having them run 1-2 cat6 Ethernet cables next to it. even if you just leave them coiled up unused in the wall, it can be useful for future expansion or changes in case you need them, and usually running one cable is expensive, but running a second cable next to it at the same time is just the cost of the cable.

Spontaneous unmuting problems - Don't blame the receiver

I noticed a problem today where my NR1608 would always unmute itself shortly afterward. Very annoying. This occurred for different video sources (e.g., both cable box and Amazon Fire). I tried changing every Audio option on my NR1608 and on my new Sony TV but couldn't figure out what was causing it. I experimented and found that unplugging the HDMI cable between my receiver and TV would stop the unmuting, so I deduced it must be a problem coming from my TV.

Strange, I hadn't noticed any spontaneous unmuting during the past couple weeks with my new receiver and TV. I periodically use headphones with the speakers muted so I know it was working correctly before. For grins I also checked my Comcast X1 cable box for any Audio options and then remembered I enabled a Comcast Labs "HDMI Link" feature earlier this week which is supposed to automatically turn off the cable box. Sure enough, disabling HDMI Link solved my unmuting issues.

Moral of the story... HDMI CEC amongst various vendors can work in mysterious ways.

Agreed! HDMI CEC has always been and continues to be inconsistent and frustrating to use especially in a system with various makes and models of components. It's too bad that we are forced to use CEC if we also want the ARC functionality. Seems counterintuitive to be honest.

Marantz NR-1607 owner here. Anyone know if the newer NR-1608 does DSD over HDMI? It's kind of dumb that my NR-1607 supports DSD over USB only. I can't play my SACD's or any DSD file coming from my BD player unless first converted to PCM. I use Audyssey mostly but there are times when I want to listen to a straight DSD signal without any conversion to PCM.

It does not. The lowest model that can do DSD over HDMI has started with the SR60XX model for the past few years. Doubt that will change for 2017.

We know that the DAC's in these models can do it, it's just the implementation than remains to be changed. I just refuse to purchase another heater for my room. That's why I gravitate now towards a smaller (height wise), much cooler running AVR.

No change on the Denon side either ... the SR6012 sister model, X3400H is also the lowest model that can do DSD over HDMI as well.

Hey. Can anyone confirm if the NR1608 saves the master volume level for each input? I had a Denon 2310CI a while back, and that was my favorite feature.

This can be done using a SMART SELECT button for each of up to 4 sources.

I checked and confirmed that my NR1608 doesn't change the volume level as I move between sources. Besides using the Smart Select buttons on the NR1608 remote, another option to get what you want is to adjust the Source Level for each input so you can maintain a consistent volume level. For example, my Cable box volume is a bit lower than my Amazon Fire TV so I set the cable input source level to +5 db and set my power-on volume level to 60. It's not perfect, but works well enough for me.

Thanks. btw, is the USB port on the 1608 USB 3.0 or still 2.0? I see a lot of things still coming with 2.0 for no apparent reason.
