Is 5.1 Toslink Acceptable?

Just how bad is 5.1 Toslink? I am a fairly impulsive individual, and decided to go with an old Toslink Denon surround receiver to cut costs, avoid low quality components, and to ensure I wouldn't have to worry about hdmi 3d pass through for the projector. Of course it was only after buying it that I read about the significant advancements in lossless audio formats. I'm just using a cheap set of Jamo's for the speakers, the room isn't treated at all, and I very rarely watch bluray quality content. Am I going to notice a serious loss of quality, or is it more like the difference between a good 320kbps mp3 vs lossless FLAC?

IMO the lossless audio formats are not significant. If you know anyone that has a decent blu-ray player and an up to date AVR that plays lossless audio over HDMI you can demonstrate this for yourself. Just switch the AVR to use the optical input from the blu-ray player and take a listen. Are there differences to be heard? Yes. It just isn't earth-shattering differences.

Really? It's like comparing a 1984 Ford Sierra with a 2016 Fusion.
Yes, both will take you from A to B.
I wouldnt buy a Sierra today except to display it in a museum.
