Connecting laptop to AVR

This might be a simple question, but I can't seem to figure it out myself.

I bought a Yamaha RX-V581 AVR receiver and have a couple of JBL 230 bookshelf speakers. What I want is simply play any kind of audio from my laptop, which includes Youtube, Spotify, local mp3, flac, etc. I tried bluetooth, however it has quite a lot of latency and I read the quality is not the best. Then I bought a Chromecast, but it use is also quite laggy and limited, so I feel like I will have to go with wired option (which is perfectly fine).

Now I assume the simpliest way would be to use 3.5mm jack to double RCA to connect laptop to AVR? If that's the case, do I also need some external sound card (considering my laptops card is quite poor), or AVR will handle all of the sound processing? Also would that mini to RCA connection won't sacrifice the sound quality?

Or perhaps there are better alternatives to connect laptop to AVR concerning sound quality, such as HDMI cables or USB cables?
